                      The Prophet Daniel
In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes; Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.  (Daniel 1:1-4)

WITH THESE WORDS, WE BEGIN OUR STUDY OF THE BOOK OF DANIEL, the foundational book for the study of Bible Prophecy. It is the weight of prophecy that draws stray minds to the Bible to consider its claim to be the Word of God.

I HAVE TWO BRICK-SHAPED PIECES OF IRON ON MY BACK PORCH. One piece, I use in making kraut, to weight the plate on top. This helps fermentation and helps to prevent spoilage. The other piece of iron I put on the lid of a churn containing cat food to keep the coons out. If the mama coon gets the lid off the cat food, she will have to struggle. When enemies of the Bible encounter the prophecies of the Book, they are forced to struggle. Nobody can predict the future…but the Bible does it.

ISAIAH PUT IT THIS WAY: Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,  Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:  (Isaiah 46:9-10)

THE BOOK OF DANIEL IS ONE OF THE MOST DESPISED BOOKS IN THE BIBLE, because it claims to be able to predict future things. The next most-hated book of the Bible is the book of Genesis, because it tells us that God made us and that we did not make ourselves or just appear on the scene without a designer/maker. The earth and the universe are strong evidence of a designer and maker.

FULFILLED PROPHECIES AND THE MILLIONS OF DESIGNED THINGS on the earth and in the universe are extremely heavy and challenge the challengers who do not want these things to be true. It is amusing and yet tragic, how so many people struggle ‘till they’re out of breath trying to keep true things from being true. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:  (Rom 1:20)

I AM AT A DISADVANTAGE IN EMBARKING ON A STUDY OF THE BOOK OF DANIEL because so many people of this era have decided they prefer pictures over printed words. I was given a book 20 years ago entitled: The Vanishing Word. Twenty years before that and I would not have believed it. But I do believe the printed page is vanishing with each generation. Read to your children. Let them read to you. Make a big deal out of reading at your house.

IF I COULD MAKE THIS STUDY INTO A VIDEO, the viewership would be larger than a mere readership. Newspapers are going broke and closing because so many people don’t like to read. Nevertheless, there ARE those die-hard, stone-age readers who draw their breath through printed words in a book. Take away their books or their hand-held readers and they would die of suffocation.

IT IS FOR THESE FOLKS I'VE DECIDED IT'S WORTH WRITING FOR. Also, it was our Almighty Designer and Maker who thought that languages made up of words in a vocabulary is a good idea. Pictures are nice, too, of course. But, nothing takes the place of words and the printed page.

SOMEONE MAY BE ASKING: “Is all this chatter worthwhile?” I think so. In a not-so-subtle way, I’m asking our readers to determine that you will read the stuff I dig up and send your way from the life and book of Daniel. If it’s old hat, you will enjoy visiting with an old friend. If it’s brand new, then read with full attention and do your homework that may be asked of you. Keep your Bible opened to the Book of Daniel. Ω

               Seventeen Years…
If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?  (Psalms 11:3) Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.  (Proverbs 14:34) Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance. The LORD looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men.  (Psalm 33:12-13)

IT WAS A WAKEUP CALL. We were a united nation for a few days. American flags were flying everywhere…for a few days. Americans talked about God…for a few days.
More people died in the 9/11 attacks than died in the attacks on our Navy Fleet docked in Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941.

THE DEAD IN THE TOWERS, THE PENTAGON AND FLIGHT 43 in Pennsylvania were 2,996 plus 6,000 injured.  Afterwards, of the people who lived or worked in the area 1,140 died of lung cancer or lung problems. Of the emergency responders on that day, 1,400 died of lung cancer and other lung problems.

AND THEN SOMEONE IN OUR CONGRESS made a speech and quoted this Bible verse:  The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars.  (Isaiah 9:10)

BUT, THE CONGRESSMAN THAT MADE THE SPEECH and quoted the verse from Isaiah, did not quote the verses just before that verse: The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel. And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and stoutness of heart,  (Isaiah 9:8-9)

THE POINT ISAIAH WAS DRIVING HOME WAS THAT THE NORTHERN KINGDOM had been chastened by the Lord and the national leaders said in defiance that they would replace fallen bricks with hewn stones and replace sycamores with cedars. The brick was a make-do substitute for stone and did not last long. When exposed to weather it begins to deteriorate. Stone structures can last thousands of years. The sycamore tree was a common tree that grew on the lowlands of Judea. The cedar was a precious wood with attractive odor and long-lasting quality.

THE JEWS WERE SAYING IN DEFIANCE OF GOD'S CHASTISEMENT that they would repair what was destroyed with even better. I don’t know if our congressman bothered to look up the Bible passage to know what he was talking about. He surely didn’t. If he had read the other verses, then he was deliberately in defiance.

AN INTERESTING THING ABOUT THIS IS THAT WHEN THE TWIN TOWERS CAME DOWN,  an historic church building was on the outer edge of the building collapse and was damaged. There was an old Sycamore tree near the church building and it was destroyed. During the repair work of the church building, a landscape company removed the remains of the old Sycamore tree and replaced it with a…Cedar tree. This is reported in The Harbinger by Jonathan Cahn, a Jewish Christian preacher. The book is available at Amazon.

LIKE SOME OF YOU, AFTER I RECEIVED A PHONE CALL to turn on our TV, I sat there the rest of the day and watched. It is hard for me to look at the picture above because it is so deeply buried in my memory. It was raw and cutting; emotional devastation to watch. It is the same today as we review it.

TWO THINGS COME TO MIND AS I REMEMBER SEPTEMBER 11, 2001: It was, I believe, God’s wake up call to America that everything is not alright between God and America. We have become a very wicked nation. The second thing that comes to mind is that President George W. Bush made a terrible mistake when he told America that the attack on the Twin Towers was by a few radical Islamic zealots who had hijacked the peaceful Islamic religion.

THE HISTORIC RECORD OF ISLAM SHOWS THAT THOSE PEOPLE were playing it right out of their book, the Holy Koran and its supporting books. There are many peaceful Moslems, but they are not in harmony with their book. The system is against them and if they become vocal, they won’t live long. The open aim of Islam is world conquest. They are dead-serious about it.

GEORGE WASHINGTON AND OUR EARLY GOVERNMENT had to deal with them. Our Marine Hymn mentions it: “From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli.” There are some peace-loving Moslems, but that is totally irrelevant. They are not in charge of Islam. There were peace-loving people in NAZI Germany, but it didn’t matter. They were not in charge of the war machine or the slaughter of six million Jews.

THE NATIONS THAT OPEN THEIR BORDERS TO ISLAM become the captives of Islam. It is powerful, and it is as much a threat to the United States as Communism ever was. We need to know the facts. The media and our educational systems are not giving us the facts.

I HAVE READ AT LEAST A DOZEN BOOKS BY VARIOUS AUTHORS to learn the truth about Islam. The most comprehensive book is: The History of JIHAD from Muhammad to Isis by Robert Spencer (Amazon Books). Don Boys, Ph.D., has written a good book on Islam and has a free informative website at: http://www.muslimfact.com/  Become informed and understand why it is imperative that we seal our borders and control our immigration system.

      Rooted as Trees

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.  (Psalm 1:3)

YESTERDAY, WE RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM OUR GRANDDAUGHTER, JENNIFER CLARKE, in Winston-Salem, NC. It included 68 pictures of the Toddlers Class at the Pinedale Church they attend. Avery, our great-granddaughter, is the middle child in this picture. She will be 2, October 6. Debbie Nifong and two other adults taught the class. I’m not sure which lady this is in the picture.

JENNIFER WRITES: “Here is the email from Avery’s Sunday school teacher. I couldn’t fit it all in the shared album, but I definitely wanted to share!” Following this, there is a short letter to the parents of the eight children in the class. The letter begins:

“Sept 9, 2018,
“WELL, THIS MORNING WAS GREAT WITH 8 TODDLERS participating in class. I just love big classes and this one is looking like it may be pretty big. I want you to know that I regularly pray for each of your children, including family. I believe prayers should be specific if there is ever anything that you need uplifted to our dear savior I will do it.”
The letter continues:

“THIS PAST WEEK I GOT THE JOY OF RIDING DOWN THE VIRGINIA CREEPER TRAIL with a couple of work friends. It was an amazing day in God's creation. For those of you that don't know about this trail let me tell you about it. It’s in Damascus Virginia which is about 30 miles north of Boone the same way you go to App. State. You rent a bike then a van takes you up a mountain in a 30-40 min drive; they let you out with your bike and you ride the mountain back down to the rental place.

“17.6 MILES DOWN AND 3 HOURS LATER I was totally in awe of God's creation. We followed a mountain stream and saw fishermen trying to catch rainbow trout. I saw huge boulders in the side of the  mountain and trees with deep, deep roots planted on the edge of cliffs. The trail is a gentle slope not too scary for my age, so it was fun.

“I KEPT THINKING THIS WEEK I want to be planted deep in God's word like the trees that were so beautiful along the cliffs. I want my children and your children to be anchored with deep, deep truths so that when the hurricane comes they will stand strong and not fall. I kept seeing signs, "watch for falling rock," as we rode.

“THE ROCKS WILL FALL NO MATTER WHAT WE PLACE ALONGSIDE THE MOUNTAINS. The rocks are like stress falling into your life, it will come - but how will you deal with it? Will you lift the boulders to God or will you yell at your child? Oh, I have done that, I'm no perfect parent but I serve a perfect Savior that listens to my every stress and knows me better than I know myself. Dear parent I'm praying for you today!
I love you,
Debbie Nifong”

THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL PIECES I HAVE READ IN A WHILE. The dedication of this teacher (whom I have never met) is obvious. She is already a tree and already rooted in the God of the Word and longs to be more deeply rooted in the Word of God. There was a man sitting in the floor in one of the pictures. I assume he is the father of one of the children in the class.

AND THIS, DEAR FRIENDS, IS THE HOPE OF AMERICA. One Sunday school class at a time. One dedicated mother and father at a time in the home, day after day modeling Jesus Christ to their children.

ACROSS AMERICA THIS IS GOING ON IN SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES and homes dedicated to God and in Christian Schools. In church assemblies where the Word of God is being read and explained to people interested in the Word; interested in building Godly homes and Godly families and the hope of Godly children as the outcome.

THE DEVIL IS MAD BECAUSE HE KNOWS HIS TIMES IS SHORT.  Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.  (Revelation 12:12)

HE WILL DESTROY YOUR CHILDREN IF YOU WILL LET HIM. If you ignore the souls of your children, Satan will not! Satan will destroy your children if you do not fight for them. Your strongest ally is an active Bible in your home and its effect on your life before them and your connection with a strong Bible church. If God is your daily close friend, your children will have something to copy. If you are lazy and slack about the things of God, your children will have little to copy in their own lives.

ON THE OTHER HAND, MANY PARENTS ARE GODLY and give their children the best of training and the children do not embrace it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.  (Hebrews 4:2) In that case, you weep and pray for them with your last breath. The enemies of God’s people are: The world, The flesh, and The devil.

P.S. Today is my Grandpa Richards’ birthday: 143 years old today. We always had our birthdays together. I was the last grandson of his old age. He was the best of the best. Ω

The Centennial Baptist Church story-Part 3

The Centennial Baptist Church Story-Part 3

For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.  (Hebrews 12:6-8)

I HAVE TOLD THE CENTENNIAL BAPTIST CHURCH STORY for a constructive purpose. It is a true story, told as clearly as I can remember. It was of God and not of us. God deals with us as sons and that includes chastening if it is needed.

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.  (1Corinthians 6:19-20)

IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT GETTING SAVED, being born again, is more than an experience that benefits us and that we love to think about. In this dispensation of time, born-again Christians are the Temple of the Holy Spirit just like the Tabernacle and the Temples of the Old Testament were the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. The Tabernacle and Solomon’s Temple became a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit.

THE SMALLER TEMPLE THAT WAS BUILT AFTER THE BABYLONIAN CAPTIVITY and Herod’s Temple (that existed during Jesus’ ministry) were never described as being the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit departed from Solomon’s Temple before it was destroyed. The Holy Spirit is described as indwelling Ezekiel’s Temple (that is yet to be built and will be in existence during the Millennial reign of Christ.)

When Paul preached to the leaders of Athens, Greece, he included this message:
God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;  (Act 17:24) The Holy Spirit had previously dwelt in a tabernacle and in a temple made with hands. But, it was no longer the case. From the day of Pentecost, the Spirit came to dwell in the bodies of every believer in Christ. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.  (Rom 8:9)

WITH THESE THINGS AS A BACKGROUND, it is fitting to comment about the Centennial Church story.  First, I do not that believe God lifted Paul Ferguson over the pulpit, healed his leg and energized his leg to kick the pulpit loose from a century-old Oak floor to settle a conversation I had with a deacon about moving the pulpit.

THERE WAS, OBVIOUSLY, AN ATTITUDE TOWARD THE PULPIT BY THE PEOPLE of the church that was more honoring to men of the past than to the Lord. When I went there as pastor, there were about nine people attending church and the church had become a memorial to by-gone days. The Lord was about to begin a harvest of souls there, and the prevailing attitude had to be broken up before the Holy Spirit would have the freedom to work His will in the community. That’s the only explanation I have for it.

THIS WAS THE BEAKING UP OF FALLOW GROUND. For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.  (Jeremiah 4:3) Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.  (Hosea 10:12)

MANY PEOPLE ARE PRAYING FOR A SPIRITUAL AWAKENING IN AMERICA. That is the greatest hope America has. But God’s plan is to break up fallow ground before He does His work of renewal.  Also, the seed of new life is to be planted in ground that is free of thorns. I have spent many days plowing fields. Thorns do not take root in ground that was plowed last year. But if ground is not plowed for a few years, thorns will indeed grow and may take over the field. So, if we want revival in America, a lot of plowing of fallow ground must take place first.

THE BIZARRE INCIDENT THAT TOOK PLACE IN CENTENNIAL BAPTIST CHURCH is an example of what may happen wherever the Spirit of God is at work toward a larger harvest. The uprooting and kicking over of the pulpit is unusual. But, be careful about putting God in a box and thinking that you know what God is going to do if He pours out His Spirit upon a church. The number one thing that must take place is the humbling of hearts and letting go of customary control of everything and trusting God to do what must be done in the process of revival.

IN 1845, (ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED 1754) John Gillies published a large book: Historical Collections of Accounts of Revival. The copy I have is republished by The Banner of Truth Trust from the original plates. It is characteristic of genuine revivals that the people in revivals understand that they are no longer in control. Along with true revivals, come the satanic mimics of real revival that is infused with wild fire.

THAT'S THE NATURE OF THINGS WHEN REAL POWER IS DISPLAYED. THE DEVIL  will always be there so that discernment must be exercised to know what God is doing in contrast to what the devil is doing. I would that every preacher in America had a copy of that book and had read and marked it. It would help us with greater perspective of our need today. Things got to be very wicked back in those days. But, we have our own days to think about, don’t we? May God pour out His Spirit upon us! Ω

The Centennial Baptist Church Story-Part 2

But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.  Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.  (Ephesians 4:7-8)

GOD GIVES GIFTS TO MEN and women according to His plan for each of us. We all don’t have the same gift or the same calling.

AFTER I HAD BEEN PREACHING AT CENTENNIAL A FEW MONTHS, I mentioned to one of the deacons that I needed his help. I was probably 19 by this time. I walked around the pulpit a lot and I had to pass between the pulpit and a big upright piano to the left of the pulpit. I was bumping my left elbow against that piano every time I went back to the pulpit to read the Bible or glance at my notes. The piano couldn’t be moved. It was against the wall. “Could we move the pulpit over a foot or so and that would give me more room?”

I WAS SURPRISED THAT I HAD HIT A NERVE. “No sir, Brother Dan!” “That pulpit was nailed down by Grandpa So-and-So and it will have to stay where it is.” He seemed so adamant about it that I immediately gave it up. I assured him that it would be alright as it was and that I would just have to be more careful as I walked between the pulpit and the piano. I never said another word about it to anyone, private or public, and let the matter drop. I never dreamed what would happen to that pulpit in a few months. That’s what this story is about.

A FEW WEEKS LATER, I ASKED PAUL FERGUSON if he would come to Centennial and preach for a week. He agreed, and I began to announce it and promote the meeting. What I didn’t know was that Paul immediately got a burden for the meeting and he cut his college classes so he could pray all week for the meeting.

PAUL HAD BEEN THE WELTER-WEIGHT BOXING CHAMPION of the Southeast U.S. for eleven years (1939-1950). He had had 232 professional fights, losing 10, with 7-8 draws and was never knocked out. Two-thirds of his 214 wins were knock-outs. I didn’t ask him to preach because of his boxing career, because I didn’t know these things then. I did know that he prayed a lot.

PAUL PRAYED AND PREACHED LIKE HE FOUGHT IN THE RING: with all his heart. He had already memorized several thousand verses of Scripture and his sermons were filled with the Word of God. Before he died, he had memorized over 8,000 verses of Scripture. So, Paul had prayed and preached Monday-Thursday. We had bought a second bus and the buses were bringing in people and several cars of people were there. But Paul sensed that some of the people had issues that needed to be settled with the Lord.

ON FRIDAY, HE PRAYED ALL DAY AND THAT NIGHT, READ FROM LUKE 16 about the rich man that went to hell. I was watching him closely and thought to myself: “He’ll never make it.” He paced the aisle back and forth between the pulpit and the door. He was disturbed over the lost people that were there. But, suddenly his mood changed. He was like Elijah.

THE BUILDING WAS PACKED TIGHT. Farmers, coal miners and loggers; strapping men! A few young men from Temple were there. Bobby Oswald had lost a kidney in a bar fight in Hong Kong (or some such place) while in the Merchant Marines. He wasn’t afraid of anything.

SUDDENLY, AS PAUL STOOD IN THE AISLE IN FRONT OF THE PULPIT, he threw his Bible and bounced it off the back door. He hurried down the aisle and began to jump up and down on the Bible. He began his sermon: “Don’t look at me! This is what you’re doing to the Bible.”  “I had me a big Billy Graham sermon all prepared for tonight, but God has shown me that if some of you people don’t get right with God, He is going to kill you.” Had he lost his mind? Had all the punching he had taken in the ring finally gotten to him? Oh yes, I thought those things. I had never seen such a show! NEVER!

THE ONLY THING WRONG WITH MY REASONING WAS I KNEW THAT A FEW PEOPLE had already died in some of his meetings and that people had died in some of Mordecai Ham’s meetings (who had led Billy Graham to the Lord in Charlotte, NC.) In Elisha’s day we have this: And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.  And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. m.  (2Kings
And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of the
2:23-24)

IT IS DIFFICULT FOR ME TO WRITE THIS ARTICLE AND DO IT JUSTICE. God’s power can water a rose garden with gentle droplets of rain and never disturb a rose petal. And God’s power can twist a mighty Oak tree in half with the wind of a tornado. Let’s don’t put God in a box and insist that He do His work a certain way that we have decided. There’s a shovel driven all the way through a tree a few miles from here. A God that can drive wheat straws through a telephone pole can do things we are not accustomed to.

IN CENTENNIAL, I WAS SITTING ALMOST ON THE FRONT PEW on the right side, watching Paul pacing back and forth. Suddenly, he came hopping like a Kangaroo toward the pulpit. His forward motion paused at the pulpit and he transferred his weight to his hands as he went over the pulpit. I remember saying to myself: “How did he do that?”

HE TURNED AROUND AND MADE THREE QUICK JABS WITH HIS RIGHT FOOT. The pulpit lay on its face in the aisle. Keep in mind that the floor was dry Oak lumber, a hundred years old and the pulpit was fastened to the floor with 12-penny nails through an Oak liner inside the bottom of the pulpit.

I HAVE REWORKED A FEW PIECES OF USED OAK LUMBER and if you use a big wrecking bar to pull the nails out, about half of the nail heads will pop off and leave the nail in the wood. In this case, all the nails holding down the pulpit came loose, and were sticking out of the bottom of the pulpit. They all came out of the floor. Three quick jabs!

PAUL STOOD LOOKING AT THE PULPIT ON ITS FACE AND THE MESS OF BOOKS and junk that came out of it. He commented: “There, I’ve torn down your god!” I had said nothing to him about my problem with the pulpit or the deacon’s refusal to move it over a foot.

A DEAR, ARISTOCRATIC SISTER WHISPERED BEHIND ME: “Why doesn’t someone do something?” I wondered that same thing. Bobby Oswald who lost the kidney in the bar fight in Hong Kong, never moved. None of the big loggers and miners moved. But suddenly, the fear of God fell on that congregation and we all went to our knees.

I EXPECTED SOMEONE TO DIE ON THE SPOT. I knew God was there and I wasn’t going to interfere with it. I looked around and then I began searching my own heart and confessing everything I could think of that might be a problem. Finally, people began coming to the altar to pray. It was a GREAT soul-searching.

AFTER HE MEETING, WE TEMPLE FELLOWS WENT TO MY FOLKS' HOUSE where Paul was staying for the week. The house was dark. He came out on the porch, weeping. He was half-apologizing but couldn’t bring himself to apologize. He said: “Brother Dan, you’ve got to believe me; God set me over that pulpit and used my foot to kick it down. Repeatedly, he said that.

(THE NEXT NIGHT I COULD NOT GET MY CAR UP TO THE CHURCH. There were cars everywhere and I had to walk up to the church.)

WHAT I DID NOT KNOW THAT NIGHT, WAS THIS: Paul Ferguson loved to jump horses over obstacles. Several months before this special night at Centennial, he was jumping a horse over an obstacle. The saddle had loosened and when the horse jumped, the saddle slipped over and threw him off, but his foot was caught in the stirrup of the saddle.

THE HORSE KEPT RUNNING, DRAGGING PAUL BY HIS FOOT ON HIS BACK for a good distance. His leg was about ruined. He could walk if he didn’t raise his foot and walked with a shallow step. He was not physically able to go over the pulpit. As Paul went over the pulpit, his leg was healed, and he was able to use that foot to kick the pulpit loose from the Oak floor. I did not know about this for another twenty years. He simply did not tell me that night and the story did not find its way into the stories about Paul Ferguson.

IT HAS BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE I HAVE TOLD THIS STORY. It’s sort of like Mary in the book of Luke: But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.  (Luke 2:19)

The centennial baptist church story

The Centennial Baptist Church Story

And the Spirit of God came upon Azariah the son of Oded:  And he went out to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear ye me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin;

The LORD is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you.  Now for a long season Israel hath been without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law.  But when they in their trouble did turn unto the LORD God of Israel, and sought him, he was found of them.  (2Chronicles 15:1-4)

THERE'S AN IRON-CLAD PRINCIPLE IN THESE VERSES: “The Lord is with you, while ye be with Him.” He will never leave or forsake His own who look to Him and lean on Him for counsel and direction. But, if we decide to walk our own independent way, even if we do belong to Him, He will let us go our own way until we hit a brick wall. Christians do not sing “I Did it My Way” with Frank Sinatra. We sing: “Have thine own way, Lord, Have thine own way.”

THESE WERE GOD'S PEOPLE AND THEY HAD BEEN "WITHOUT THE TRUE GOD," because they walked away from Him. If we want to walk without holding His hand, He will let us. He will say to us: “Go ahead and show me what you can do.”  “Sin will take you further than you meant to stray; He will keep you longer than you meant to stay; It will cost you more than you meant to pay.”  We can count on that.

I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT THE LORD BEING WITH ME WHEN I WAS EIGHTEEN, when I became pastor of a little church in Alabama. I am more amazed by it now, looking back on it, than I was when it was happening. I began thinking about those days again when I came across this picture in my computer photo album.

THE PICTURE: This is the “bus congregation” at Centennial Baptist Church, Eureka Road, Stevenson, Alabama, 1953. The church was the 3rd oldest Baptist church in Jackson County, Alabama. The founding date was about 1843. The community was built around a railroad repair shop that was built for emergency repairs on railroad cars and locomotives.

THE REPAIR SHOP WAS BUILT ADJACENT TO THE RAILROAD that ran from Nashville to Chattanooga. That railroad figured large in the Civil War between the states. One reason I’m giving the details of this story is that the Google references have nothing to say about it. No one has written anything about it. I will later offer this material to some of the sources that include the name of the church but have no data about it.

THE SHOP INCLUDED A TURNSTILE CAPABLE OF TURNING A LOCOMOTIVE AROUND. The repair operation required a good number of workers who needed housing. The railroad may have built many or all the houses. Eventually the repair shop moved out and the houses and several families remained there.

WHEN THE SHOP WAS OPERATING AT FULL CAPACITY, a typical-size Baptist church building was built. There was no Sunday school wing because they didn’t have a Sunday school. After a hundred years or so, the building had deteriorated and had to be torn down. Enough usable material, mostly Oak lumber and windows was salvaged from the larger building to build a smaller building that you see in the picture.

THERE WAS ONE AISLE IN THE MIDDLE. The pews were jammed against the outside walls. When the “new” building was built, the church renamed itself: Centennial Baptist Church. That was about 1943. There’s a good-size cemetery there, which has helped to maintain interest in the church. The active attendance, in 1953, was by 3-4 families that remained; all of them older people.

THUS, I BECAME THEIR 18-YEAR-OLD PASTOR (at the far left in the picture). On the extreme right is L.C. Rucker, from Rome, GA. He was leading singing for me that day. One of the deacons had heard me preaching on a local radio station and contacted me. Pastors were as hard to find as hens’ teeth (it’s still that way). They were desperate to get anyone who could read the Bible to come and meet with them. Consequently, I was ordained May 6, 1953 by the Highland Park Baptist Church in Chattanooga, TN. and began pastoring with nine people and began visiting most of the day, every Saturday.

I WAS A FARM BOY AND I KNEW THAT IF YOU WANTED ANYTHING OUT OF THE GARDEN,  you had to plant it first. I was 18 and it would be four months before I would have my 19th birthday. I knew a little about sawmilling and a little about farming, but nothing about pastoring a church. And what can we say about the old heads who thought they would be safe with a kid preacher?

I KNEW THIS: THAT IF I WANTED TO PREACH TO MORE THAN NINE PEOPLE every Sunday, I would have to come up with something to get more people into the services. If I had a bus, I could tell the people I was visiting to get on our bus Sunday morning. I found a 36-passenger bus on a used car lot in Chattanooga. A 1940 Chev for $250.

IT WAS EXACTLY LIKE THE BRAND-NEW ONE I HAD RIDDEN TO SCHOOL in the first grade in 1940 at Alpine, TN. This one had served its time and was “retired.” Someone had painted it a dark green and aluminum paint on the top. How much oil would it use, and would the rods stay in the engine? It turned out to be a hard-working pony and used hardly any oil.

THE BANK TURNED ME DOWN FOR A LOAN. (Smart men ran the bank.) OK, in that case everybody should have a part in buying this “special” bus and then we wouldn’t owe anything on it. I had no shame. I simply could not imagine us NOT having that bus. I went to every merchant in Stevenson, asking for money to help pay for the bus. I was an equal-opportunity beggar.

DR. BROWDER GAVE ME $10. Several gave $5 and then a lot of $3 and $1 contributions. In a couple of weeks, we had enough money to buy the bus, debt-free. That was even better than getting it from the bank. We bought two new tires for the front. But, we were never able to buy new tires for the rear; just one re-capped tire at a time, about one a month as the tires gave out. We would take up a special collection to buy one re-capped tire, about $18-20.

SOMETIMES WE WERE ABLE TO STUFF 65 PEOPLE INTO THE 36-PASSENGER BUS, which blew out “may-pop” tires that were not up to the load. We sang and laughed with good tires and flat tires. We had many professions of faith and baptized them in nearby Crow Creek when the weather was warm enough. Crow Creek was always cold. That didn’t matter either. We baptized about 100 people in Crow Creek that year.

STOCKY, JABBO KIRK WAS ONE OF THE FIRST MEN TO GET SAVED. He was built like a Mack truck and was rough and tough. When he came home drunk on Saturday night his wife would lock him out of the house and he would sleep it off on the front porch. One winter night, she locked him out and he came close to freezing to death.

WHEN HE GOT SAVED IN THAT LITTLE CHURCH, he stood up at the altar where he had been praying, picked me up in a bear-hug and carried me all over the church while he shouted. No need to struggle with him. Just enjoy the ride. The Holy Spirit kicked over the honey bucket in his soul and he couldn’t contain himself.

JABBO COULDN'T HELP ENOUGH. So, I got him to drive the bus. He also worked on it and kept it in good shape. One Saturday we put down new Oak flooring over the old. We worked all night and finished Sunday morning at daybreak. I don’t remember what I preached on that Sunday. I just remember that we finished the floor.

ONE SUNDAY AFTERNOON, I WENT OVER TO HIS HOUSE before church and saw they were running behind, so I picked up the milk bucket off the kitchen table and quietly slipped out to the barn. I was about half-done milking, pushing my head into the flank of the cow to hold her steady.

JABBO'S WIFE CAME TO THE BARN DOOR, calling to her husband. When she opened the door, she was shocked to find me leaning against the cow in my suit and tie, just milking away. From then on, she insisted that I eat with them when we could get together. She had thought I was too starchy to have anything to do with me. OK. I needed to milk a cow to move things along.

I NEED TO SHARE SEVERAL STORIES ABOUT CENTENNIAL and I’ll tell a few of those next time. God willing.

Autumn leaves...

Autumn Leaves…
And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.  (Genesis 8:21-22)

AUTUMN WILL BE WITH US IN A FEW DAYS.  The seasons that occur as regular as clockwork are part of God’s testimony that it is He that hath made us not we ourselves. It is the Book of Genesis that tells us that He oversees the seasons and the cold and heat, and summer and winter. If the ice caps melt, it will be because God does it and not because of diesel engines. Is Genesis reliable?

IF GENESIS IS NOT RELIABLE, THE REST OF THE BIBLE IS IRRELEVANT. Notice the text says: “while the earth remaineth.” The earth as we know it is not eternal. It will one day burn up and nothing living will survive the fire. Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.  (2Peter 3:12-14) There will be a new earth and a new heaven (space and atmosphere) around it. The New Jerusalem will come down and the earth will again be inhabited.

MEANTIME, WE LIVE ON THIS PLANET WE CALL: EARTH. It is beautiful but crippled with the curse of God upon it because sin has entered it. Nevertheless, God has displayed His glory in the awesome variety of living things that inhabit the earth. We humans are part of that array. This human is ready for Autumn, following the wonderful summer we have had.

WHEN I WAS SIX, THERE WAS A COMMUNITY PROVERB that when the hogs start carrying cobs, it’s going to rain. We got it wrong. It was the sow that was carrying all the cobs and she was about to have a litter of pigs. She was carrying cobs to make a nice bed for her babies. This nest building is extremely strong in pregnant sows. Even if she is inside a building and doesn’t need to build a nest --- she NEEDS to build a nest. She has to pursue it until she is satisfied that it is finished. Only then can she rest and be satisfied.

GOD BUILDS THIS STRONG INSTINCT  INTO HOGS. Birds have a strong instinct to build their nests and it must be the design that each type of bird builds. Human beings also are endowed with drives that influence our behavior. But, we are fallen creatures and some of our urges drive us into opposition to God and His perfect will for us. We need variety and change in our lives. The four seasons are a great part of change that we need.

LIVING IN THE COUNTRY ENABLES YOU TO SEE AND HEAR MORE STUFF GOING ON. When God puts on a show in the Spring, the flowers keep tract of their time to bloom. We don’t have to go around waking up the flowers. The trees begin to bloom, and the honey bees begin extracting honey. Pairs of wild geese collect with other geese and they all head north for the summer.

HUMMINGBIRDS ARE AMAZING. One Spring we were a little late getting our Humming- bird feeder up. We were sitting in the swing on the front porch and one of our returning birds flew right up to us, within 2-3 feet and began to tweet at us. As if to say: “Hey, I’m back! Why isn’t my feeder hanging up and ready? I’m hungry!” Well, there was nothing to do but get that feeder up right away!

THE BEARS GET UP, "HUNGRY AS A BEAR" and begin foraging for food. It is astounding what the change of seasons does to plant life and animal life…and human beings. We’ve had enough darker days to make us grumpier than usual and ready for outside, and sunshine!

LEAVES FILL OUT AND THE FRESH GREEN IS INVIGORATING! It stays that way for a couple of months while the rains come every two or three days. Gardens and fields grow up and gives us all the fresh vegetables and fruits we can imagine! It dawned on me one day that God not only gave strawberries a distinctive taste but put something in our tongues that matches the taste of what He put in the strawberry. Cool!

GO THROUGH ALL THE FRUITS WITH THEIR DIFFERENT TASTES AND TEXTURES and then the vegetables and the several kinds of grains. Everything doesn’t taste like oatmeal. All the fruits and vegetables don’t mature the same week. How would we harvest it and put it away for the winter if it all came in the same week? Cornbread! There’s no substitute for cornbread. Maybe I got hooked on it during the Depression when we ate it so many ways. I can’t go without cornbread many days without the strong craving for it….with or without buttermilk. I must say that our God knows a lot about making things and knows a lot about making tongues to crave the things He has made. It is awesome!

THE SUMMER, THEN, TAKES ITS TOLL AND WE'RE READY for a change of seasons. I think it has hit me a little earlier this year. I’m not ready for cold weather but I am ready for autumn leaves. Do you ever have a yearning to hear leaves rattling under your feet and long to smell the fragrance of autumn leaves? And maybe, a hunger to smell wood smoke from a chimney that’s knocking off the morning chill? Not a sound of an engine unless it’s in the distance.

I’M A LITTLE EARLY, BUT WHAT HAS COME MY WAY IS PART OF GOD'S DESIGN that operates in all His creation that society calls: “nature.”  The humming birds will be going south soon. The clacking, quaking flocks of wild geese will head south. If you have a pond, they may stop off and visit with you for water and may rest a day or two.

SO, NOT ONLY DO THE BLACKBERRIES KNOW WHEN TO BLOOM, but birds and butterflies migrate back and forth with the seasons. They know when it’s time to pack their suitcases and head north or south. I read somewhere that in an area up north where a good number of bears had been tagged with little radio transmitters, the bears all went to bed within a 3-5 day period and came out of their hibernation the same way.

I’LL BE GLAD WHEN AUTUMN GETS HERE. I’ll be glad when Winter sets in. I’ll be glad when Spring gets here. I’ll be glad when Summer finally gets here. We humans need a variety of seasons. God made us that way. Autumn 2018 is: September 22 – December 21.

SO, IF YOU'RE WORRIED THAT MAKING ENERGY FOR TRAVEL AND INDUSTRY and heating our homes is going to melt the ice caps, you might want to meditate on our text for today. It amuses me that the news media tells us extremely cold winter weather is caused by global warming. Study this carefully:

While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.  (Genesis 8:21-22)

WE'RE NOT GOING TO BURN UP THE EARTH BY BUILDING A FIRE TO COOK OUR TATERS. Before the crops can be harvested, they must have a growing season. It’s going to be cold and it’s going to be hot. God is still in charge of planet earth. Either you believe the Word of God by faith or you believe the climate alarmists by faith. I believe God.

IN CONJUNCTION WITH GENESIS, the New Testament tells us: For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:  (Romans 1:18-20)

IF YOU HAVE DECIDED TO TAKE THE PLACE OF GOD and go against Him like Satan and his angels, it is going to cost you dearly. God loves you and sent His Son to die on the cross in your place. He will forgive you of all your sins if you will repent, turn away from your sins, and receive His Son as your Lord and Savior. You will not be alive on earth very long. But you will be alive in Heaven or Hell forever without end. Ω

The Funeral of Sen. John McCain

The Funeral of Sen. John McCain

…it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:  (Hebrews 9:27)Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:  (Romans 5:12)

CLEARLY, GOD OVERSEE HE BIRTH AND DEATH OF EVERY PERSON in the human race. We are privileged to live on earth for a little while and then we must move on. How silly for us to get overly attached to this life as though it were a permanent thing. This is the birthing room where God populates eternity. Once we are born, we then live somewhere …forever. Eternity is too long to find out you are in the wrong place. Give me the story of the Cross of Calvary and the songs of Zion.

BARBARA AND I WATCHED THE FULL FUNERAL OF SENATOR JOHN McCAIN, Saturday. We felt that he had earned his place as a public figure in American public life and was worthy of our respect in watching the memorial of his homegoing. Sen. McCain was 82 years old. It is noteworthy that his mother, Roberta McCain attended his funeral at the age of 106. His first wife, Carol (81) did not attend the funeral at the Washington National Cathedral but said she would attend the private service at the Annapolis Navy Academy.

WE ARE INSTRUCTED TO PRAY FOR "ALL THAT ARE IN AUTHORITY."
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;  Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.  (1Timothy2:1-4)

WHOEVER IS PRESIDENT, HE'S YOUR PRESIDENT, he’s your president and you are commanded of the Lord to pray for him. You may feel more like cussin’ him but that’s not on the list. Pray for him. If you don’t care what God said about it, then I’ve lost my case.

SEN. McCAIN'SFUNERAL WAS A GREAT DISPLAY OF POMP AND CEREMONY. We have seen other funerals at the National Cathedral, but nothing as elaborate as this. It was a fitting tribute to the warrior and senator. It included a strong political statement. That’s his privilege. It’s his funeral. The New Yorker said: “It was the biggest resistance meeting yet.” Fox News had a different slant. We probably won’t see another service with that assembly of “establishment” figureheads in a long time. It was good to see Henry Kissinger there, making some comments.

McCAIN'S DAUGHTER: MEGHAN, BROUGHT THE MOST STIRRING and challenging speech. It’s her daddy! And it showed. When she fell off her horse and got bunged up, after her daddy saw she was alright, he put her back on the horse and urged her to finish what she had started, to be tough. That was good! She insisted that the defining word for her daddy was love. He loved the underdog. Yes, I believe he did. Everybody didn’t agree with him on how to help the underdog. I do think he did all he could, and he is to be honored for that.

Sen. McCAIN WAS NEITHER REPUBLICAN OR DEMOCRAT. He was a maverick. He very painstakingly planned the service and secured the speakers. To me he was saying that he was the man that had crossed the aisle and that Washington should do its business that way. I suppose all America wishes that. I think that everyone in the crowded Cathedral had their own private reason for being there and what the service meant to them. It was an exercise in “making nice.” For a few minutes, opposing warriors pretended like they could get along. We will see how the “nice” holds out Tuesday when the Senate Hearing begins for the Supreme Court nominee.

THE WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL is the “dressiest” church house in America. It’s the solemn place for America to make a statement of moral conscience to the Nation. It’s sort of like Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem. To its credit, we heard Christian music: “Amazing Grace,” “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” done by the Navy Choir and other high-class Christian music. But, I’m afraid that aside from ceremony, it was a few minutes of “play acting.”

WHY AM ITALKING ABOUT SEN. McCAIN'S FUNERAL? Because God’s Word is the conscience of the nation and our government has been thumbing its nose at God and going against the Word of God. A thousand babies are being ripped out of their mothers’ wombs every day in America and these establishment politicians have turned their heads the other way as though they have no duty before God. The Word of God has plenty to say about it and we must all continue to make it an issue.
