the six miracles of calvary...the veil

The Six Miracles of Calvary…the Veil
And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom;…  (Mat 27:51)

The next great wonder mentioned at Calvary was the dividing of the veil into two pieces, from top to bottom. For many years, I assumed that the earthquake was the instrument that divided the veil. The room was thirty feet wide and the veil was approximately sixty feet high. Why would such a great earthquake not have ripped the veil in half? It is important to realize that the veil was hanging loosely and not fastened to the wall under stress.

If the earthquake had ripped the veil, the force for ripping the veil would have been transmitted through the walls of the building into the veil. But, the earthquake did not affect the sturdy stone building and therefore did not cause the ripping of the veil.

If our Bible text gives a cause for the ripping of the veil, it is obviously the result of Jesus’ cry.  Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.   And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;  (Mat 27:50-51)

“According to the order given here, the rending of the veil was independent of the quaking of the earth. Indeed, whatever there is of cause and effect would lead us to think that the rending of the veil was the result of the second of the two cries from Calvary, that is, the last, loud, expiring cry of the Crucified. The same cry then would be the cause of the earthquake” (Nicholson)

The rending of the veil and the simultaneous earthquake were twin actions following the cry of the crucified. “It was, as we may say, the loud voice of the expiring Savior which split in two the veil of the Temple, and shook the earth, and broke the rocks.” (Nicholson)
The Roman centurion (army commander in charge of one hundred men) who witnessed the crucifixion, indicates that he was affected partly by seeing the earthquake.

Mark’s account mentions nothing of the earthquake but says that the centurion was affected by his seeing that Jesus cried out in such a powerful way at the instant of his last breath. Men did not always have that much power in their last utterance from the cross. Jesus’ last utterance from the cross must have pierced the soul of the centurion and struck him as being extra ordinary for a man’s last breath.

“From this comparison of the two evangelists it is suggested that the force of the cry is to be measured by the quaking of the earth; and by that, then also by the rending of the veil.” (Nicholson)

The stone Temple took the place of the Tabernacle which was made of animal skins and boards held together with metal fasteners and hooks. However, the veil was a continuation of the veil design used in the Tabernacle. In purpose, the veil of the Temple was the same as the veil of the Tabernacle. Its purpose was to conceal from human view what lay beyond it.

The Tabernacle began with the courtyard where people could assemble. A veil prevented the common people from seeing into the first room of the Tabernacle, the Holy Place. The priests could enter that room, the Holy Place, and perform certain tasks on a daily basis. Beyond the Holy Place was another veil and beyond it was the Holy of Holies.

Priests could not enter the Holy of Holies. Only the High Priest could enter this room once a year to bring blood to anoint the Ark of the Covenant and to present the incense. The veil which concealed the Holy of Holies (or, Most Holy Place) was torn in two pieces when Jesus cried with a loud voice: “It is finished” and gave up the ghost.

The writer of Hebrews in the New Testament refers to the ripping of the veil: Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;  And having an high priest over the house of God;  Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.  (Heb 10:19-22)

Jesus was that veil an
d through the rending of his body on the cross, He opened the way for sinners to approach God directly. He offered His own blood as the great High Priest of Heaven, just one time. The ordinary High Priests had to offer blood every year.

The veil was torn in two at the exact moment of the Evening Sacrifice, at 3:00 p.m. Several priests were on duty in the Holy Place, preparing for the Evening Sacrifice. But on this special day, there would be no Evening Sacrifice by their hands. Jesus, Himself would be that Evening Sacrifice and would offer His own blood. It is important to note that the earthly Tabernacle and then the earthly Temple were made after the pattern of a Tabernacle in the heavens.

The earthly tabernacle received earthly sacrifices. But the Heavenly Tabernacle would receive a better blood sacrifice than the earthly Tabernacle: It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.  (Heb 9:23) Jesus offered His blood in the Heavenly Tabernacle. When He died, the veil of the earthly Tabernacle was rent so that all could see it.

And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.  (Act 6:7)

The reason a great company of the priests in Jerusalem were obedient to the Christian faith is through the testimony of the priests who were on duty in the Temple. They knew what they had seen and they knew what it had meant. None of them could have ripped the 60’ veil from the top down and they all knew it. They had seen a miracle…the miracle of the rent veil.  They would become Christians in a few days. They would tell the other priests what they had seen and many other priests would become Christians because of the renting of the veil. Ω

The Six Miracles of Calvary…Darkness
And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.  And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.  And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.  (Luke 23:44-46)

I know very little in this life except what I have learned standing on the shoulders of other men and women. It is profoundly true in selecting the title: The Six Miracles of Calvary, from a book written by William R. Nicholson (January 8, 1822 – June 7, 1901). It was copyrighted 1927 by Moody Bible Institute and first appeared in the Moody Bible Institute Monthly at the hands of James M. Gray, D.D., Editor in Chief. This is one of the books I read every year because it is full, timeless, and accurate.

I have waited several weeks with great anticipation to review the pertinent facts of The Six Miracles of Calvary. As time draws near, I carry the book with me in the car and as I shop and visit doctor’s offices for our annual medical check-ups, I ask everyone who will listen: “Have you read this book?”  And before they can answer I launch into the miracle of the three hours of darkness and move on to the ripping of the 60’ veil that covered the Holy of Holies in the Jewish Temple.

(Today, as I visited my cancer surgeon for my annual checkup, I rushed into the book, counting that this may be his only chance of ever hearing such news as the three hours of darkness that covered Jerusalem and the ripping of the 60’ veil in the Temple. He was quiet. I hope he got it…and that it got him.)

If there’s time and interest, we discuss the coming out of the graves in Jerusalem of a great many dead people who show themselves alive to many living people. On that week, there were over a million Jews in Jerusalem for Passover, gathered from every part of the nation of Israel and from many foreign countries where they were scattered.

The darkness, the earthquake, the opening of the graves, the rending of the veil, the rising of the dead from the graveyard and the resurrection of Jesus from the grave. These things are the subject of THE SIX MIRACLES OF CALVARY. They constitute the centerpiece of human history in condensed form. I never tire of reading what God did during those three days of human history. We will visit these six miracles in brief and try to carry forward some worthwhile memories. We will go slightly beyond Easter to make the visits.

The Calvary miracles were from Heaven above, from the earth, and from under the earth. God displayed an array of testimony on those three days that were meant to be an eternal and lasting testimony to every living soul who would hear and be open to an honest encounter with God’s testimony.

Jesus had been on the cross for three hours beginning at 9:00 a.m. and at high noon, darkness fell upon Jesus on the cross and upon a million-people packed into the city of Jerusalem. This did not happen in a corner. “Over all the earth” or as Matthew states: “over all the land.” “No one can positively say that the darkness did not extend over the daylight half of the globe.” But if the phenomenon was limited to Judea, it was even then sufficiently remarkable. Indeed, in that case, it had a concentration of force like that of the three days of darkness in Egypt, while there was yet light in Goshen. At any rate, the darkness extended over all the land.

It was not an eclipse of the sun. The longest eclipse of the sun can only last slightly over eight minutes, not even nine minutes. Besides that, it occurred at Passover which is always on the season of a full moon. During a full moon, an eclipse of the sun is impossible. The “sun was darkened.” There was a failure of its light. The occasion was not caused by an absence of the sun, which is the cause of our night time. It was darkness at noon time, a darkness in the presence of the sun. It was not caused by the passing of another heavenly body between the sun and the earth.

Light is the antagonist, the invader of darkness. Darkness does not invade light. And yet, darkness invaded the sun and overcame the brightness of the sun. The darkness of Calvary smothered the light of the noonday sun. “What a trembling conception of the almightiness of God!” The darkness that began the three hours, was the same darkness that concluded the three hours of darkness. During the three hours of darkness, it was as God the Father had drawn a veil over the suffering of His Son on the cross to obscure Him from the mocking, rebellious eyes of His tormentors.

It would seem that His suffering in silence could be no longer endured. His suffering had grown more and more intense and we may assume that the darkness may have grown more and more dark, though it does not say. How dark was it? We do not know but it was not merely twilight. It was a frightening darkness and known to over a million people who saw it and no doubt discussed it in sacred, -hushed tones.

The Roman Centurion “feared greatly” and he was a battle-hardened soldier. Some beat their breasts with intense awe at what they were seeing. One does not “fear greatly” and beat one’s breast in awe because a cloud passes over. It was three solid hours of intense darkness. A million people would go home and tell the story the rest of their lives and it would become solid folklore for generations to come. The ones who stayed home to tend the cattle and the farms, also experienced the darkness for three hours. They would all join hands in telling future generations what took place that day. Ω

The seven coverings of the cross

The Seven Coverings of the Cross
And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.  (Luke 23:33)

The cross of Christ is the centerpiece of human history. Nothing compares in significance to this lone event that displays God’s holiness and at once His eternal love for His sinning creatures. It was in the fullness of time that Jesus was crucified. If He had been executed earlier by Jews, He would have been stoned, for that was the Jewish way.

He was pierced by the authority and hands of Rome and their way was by crucifixion. Not a bone of him was broken. He died with criminals and with the rich in his death. He was buried and yet not left to decay in his grave. People other than Jesus interacted with the cross: the fickle crowd, the religious leaders, Pilate, Mary and other women, God the Father, The Holy Spirit.

●The Fickle Crowd Covered it with Mockery
Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.  (Mat 27:22-23)

●Pilate Covered it with a Proclamation
Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.  Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!  When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.  The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.  When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;  (Joh 19:4-8)

And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.  This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and
Latin. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.   Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.  (Joh 19:19-22)

●God Covered It with Darkness
Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.  (Mat 27:45) (An eclipse of the sun can only last for slightly over eight minutes. This darkness lasted three hours.)

●Mary and other Women Covered it with Weeping
And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.  (Luk 23:27-28)

●Jesus Covered It with Blood
But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:  But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.  (Joh 19:33-34)

●Religious Leaders Covered it with Death
But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.  (Mar 15:11) And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?  (Mark 15:12)

And they cried out again, Crucify him.  (Mar 15:13) Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.  (Mar 15:14)

Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
(1Co 2:8) (The princes of this world killed Jesus.)

●The Holy Spirit Covered It with an Invitation
And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.  (Rev 22:17)

the promised one

The Promised One…
And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.  (Luk 24:44)

God had told Moses:  The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;  (Deu 18:15). Jesus was that prophet. For centuries, the Jewish people had been taught to look for the prophet that should appear among them. The prophecy was repeated in the writings of other prophets who followed Moses.

After Jesus was crucified and risen from the dead, Jesus appeared to two of His discouraged disciples who were walking along the road to Emmaus. Our text today enters the conversation that went on between them. Jesus quoted and explained to these two men, crucial texts of Scripture from Moses, the prophets and from the Psalms. All three categories of these Scriptures contained prophecies about the one who was to come. If we would understand Easter, we must understand that Easter is rooted in these Old Testament Scriptures located in the writings of Moses, the Prophets, and in the Psalms.
I have selected McGee’s comments to give body to our story for today.

“He began with Moses and the prophets. Moses and the prophets had spoken of Him. His death and resurrection had fulfilled their prophecies. I'd love to have been there that evening, listening to Him, wouldn't you? Christ says that there are two things which are essential to the understanding of the Word of God. They are simple but important. First, as verse Luk_24:25 indicates, we must have faith in the Bible. Christ said, "O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken." Pascal said, "Human knowledge must be understood to be believed, but divine knowledge must be believed to be understood."

“I think the Bible is a closed book to the critic and the infidel. He can learn a few facts, but he misses the message. On the other hand, some simple soul whose heart is turned in humble faith to God will be enlightened by the Holy Spirit of God. The eyes of his understanding will be opened. Great men of the past have come to the pages of Scripture for light and life in the hours of darkness or crisis. It is not smart to ridicule the Bible. The Lord said, "You are a fool not to believe it." I would rather lack sophistication and subtlety than to be a fool.

“Then the Lord says that the Bible can only be divinely understood. Human intellect is simply not enough to comprehend its truths. Verse Luk_24:45 tells us: "Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures." Then in 1Co_2:14 Paul declares, "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."

“There are things that are above and beyond human comprehension, and only the Holy Spirit of God can make them real to us. Our prayer ought to be, "Open Thou mine eyes that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy Word." We should come with a humble attitude to the Word of God. Just because you read the Bible does not mean that you know it. The Holy Spirit of God will have to make it real to you.” (McGee)

Before the foundation of the world

Before the Foundation of the World
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;  But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,  (1Pe 1:18-20)

The Old Farmer’s Almanac (founded 1792) highlights the Easter Season with these words: “WHAT IS EASTER SUNDAY? Easter is the most important holiday on the Christian calendar—and has been regularly observed from the earliest days of the Church. Easter Sunday celebrates Christ’s resurrection from the dead, following crucifixion. It marks the end of Holy Week, the end of Lent, and the last day of the Easter Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday), as well as the beginning of the Easter season of the liturgical year. The resurrection represents the triumph of good over evil, sin, death, and the physical body.”

It is obvious that the celebration of the resurrection of Christ has been tainted with paganism, with a rabbit that supposedly lays eggs and excites children to find them. Wikipedia says: “An English monk Bede, wrote, referring to a goddess named Eostre, in whose honour feasts were celebrated in that month. However, it is possible that Beded was only speculating about the origin of the term since there is no firm evidence that such a goddess actually existed.” (Wikipedia).

As a kid, we dyed eggs and had fun hiding them, wondering what the rabbit had to do with eggs and the resurrection of Christ from the dead. On the farm, all our eggs came from chickens, ducks, and turkeys…never from rabbits.  I still wonder who “hatched” the story and I’m not going to help parents get off the hook who can’t explain the ridiculous story to their youngsters. Nevertheless, the term: “Easter” holds its own as an established word signifying the resurrection of Christ from the dead.

The big story in today’s text about Easter is that its origin was established before the earth was made by the hand of the Lord. The Lamb of God whose blood was shed for our sins was ordained to that role before the foundation of the world. Then, John, the writer of Revelation says that during the Great Tribulation Period of Revelation, Satan will empower the beast, or political/religious world leader of that time so that he will be healed of a mortal wound and show himself to be alive. As a result, the whole world will embrace him, admire him, and worship him.

And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.  (Rev 13:8)

The lost people of the world who have already made up their minds to go against God, will worship this creature. Their names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Easter was established before the creation of the world. This is a bigger story than the rabbit, don’t you think?

I’ve heard a lot of preaching. In my earlier years I heard it said that God made man and discovered that man had messed up in the garden with the Adam and Eve thing. So, there was a council in Heaven on what to do about it. God’s Son came forth and volunteered to go down and pay the price for their sin. The only problem with that story is that it’s not true.

Before earth was made, in the mind of God the Lamb of God was already slain; before there was earth or man and before sin. This is the beginning of the story of Easter. God did not get Himself into a sin jam because He failed to think it through ahead of time. He knew what was going to happen and provided a way for man to be forgiven before there was a need.

The story of Easter is the greatest story ever told. Easter is the most important holiday on the Christian calendar—and has been regularly observed from the earliest days of the Church. Easter Sunday celebrates Christ’s resurrection from the dead, following crucifixion. Ω

precious in the sight of the lord

PRECIOUS IN THE SIGHT OF THE LORD
is the death of his saints.  (Psa 116:15)

One of the great mysteries: why is the death of His saints a precious thing? A few writers have thought about this and have proposed that it’s because our death figures as much in God’s plan as does our life. His thoughts and ways are higher than ours.

It is easier for us to think that precious in the sight of the Lord is the life and health of His saints. Doesn’t the Bible speak of whatever we do, do it in the name of the Lord and whatever we do, bring glory to God’s name? How can we bring glory to His name if our bodies lie breathless in a grave?

Our memory and our absence are two good reasons our death is not a waste. We assign plots and name them for burying the dead. Flowers are brought every year at Memorial Days of remembering our fallen soldiers and ordinary folks who lived and died. Not only is the death of His saints precious in the sight of the Lord, it should also be precious to us. After we have lived, our absence serves a continuing influence on those who want to know about it.

The man who built the house I was born in, is a point of interest with me. That was my mother’s grandpa. He hid inside hollow corn shocks when renegade soldiers came by and “borrowed” stuff from his barn. His absence stirs my interest in him.

The little woman who wore her one church dress and a flat, black straw hat with a flower is a strong memory. She carried a little white hankie which she waved mightily when she shouted and wept and walked up and down the aisle. Not a put-on. She was the real thing. Her memory and her absence serves me well, today.

Funerals are important. In fact, it is another mystery as to all that is achieved at a funeral. We make ties with people at work, school, and church. Church ties are stronger because more of the human spirit is opened up in church meetings and relationships. If the Holy Spirit is allowed to work in a church, a blending occurs like nowhere else.  The gifts of the Spirit are given primarily for ministering to the Body of Christ. “One another,” or “one to another” occurs 547 times in the King James Bible.

In talking with a lot of people one-on-one, some have told me they can meet with God walking through the woods or at the ocean beach; “I commune well with God there.” It is true that we can pray in the woods and on the beach. It is not true that we will do just as well in those places. God did not appoint us to meet Him in the woods and on the beach. Being in the House of God is not only for communion with God, it is also true that we need to commune with “one another” at the House of God.

Funerals not only honor the recently departed, funerals are also a place where the resurrection of the saved dead is proclaimed and a warning is given to those who have not yet made peace with God through the death of Christ on the cross and His resurrection. Frequent trips to the cemetery to bury the dead reminds those who attend that “we too, shall pass this way.” It also reminds us that one day the dead will rise out of those graves with a new, resurrected bodies that will never die again.

Our picture for today is of the Eastern Wall of Jerusalem. Ezekiel wrote about the sealing up of these gates at a future time (Ez 44:1-3) I mention it here because the gate and the passage in Ez 44:1-3 display the truth that “precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” http://www.bible-history.com/gentile_court/TEMPLECOURTThe_Eastern_Gate_and_Prophecy.htm gives this summary on how the gate of the east wall was sealed up.

" The "Golden Gate" was located in the East wall of Jerusalem; it was one of eleven entrance gates into the city. Notice in the above picture that this gate is sealed shut. It was sealed up in the 16th century A.D. A little background on the East gate of Jerusalem: The East gate was walled up by its Muslim conquerors (the Ottoman Turks) in 1530 A.D.
Notice also the cemetery that has been planted in front of it. Many believe this was done to prevent the entrance of the Jewish Messiah through that gate as was foretold by known Old Testament prophecies. (It was indeed the human reason the gate was sealed. Comment added by DC)

However, Ezekiel prophesied the shutting of this gate itself around 600 B.C. -- that it would be shut "because the LORD (Jehovah or Yahweh), the God of Israel, hath entered in by it, therefore it shall be shut." Jesus entered Jerusalem through the East gate around 30 A.D. (long before it was blocked by the Ottomans) as he came down from the Mount of Olives and entered the temple according to our understanding of Luke 19:28-48. He would have entered through the original gate in the wall which was destroyed with the city by the Romans in 70 A.D.

“Ezekiel says concerning this closed gate that the "Prince" (which the Messiah is often called throughout the Old Testament and Jesus is called in the New Testament) shall enter it again. Jesus, having entered the city, said that he would not be seen again until Jerusalem acknowledges him (Matthew 23:37-39).

“The Eastern gate is presently considered by the Arabs to be their exclusive property. It is sealed up and blocked off. However, one day, the Messiah will land on the Mount of Olives, with all His saints, and walk down to and right through the Eastern Gate and into the Temple area.” (biblehistory.com)

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.  Wherefore comfort one another with these words.  (1Th 4:16-18) Ω

in God's time

In God’s Time…
But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,  To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.  (Gal 4:4-5)

God does everything on a schedule. This came to my attention 40+ years ago as our choir practiced the Christmas Cantata: In the Fullness of Time, by Gloria Roe. Repeating Bible truths are good for us and this piece of music hammered that truth home for me.

Later, in my daily Bible reading I came across this striking passage where God is telling Moses how it’s going to be for the next four hundred years: And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.  And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.  (Gen 15:13-16)

The Jewish population must increase to make up a nation and that would take time. Egypt became the national womb where Israel could multiply. God told Moses of another thing that must be allowed to play out and that pertained to the Amorites whose land God was going to give to Moses and his people. God was going to give the promised land of the Amorites to Moses but He couldn’t do it yet.

God saw how the Amorites were growing more wicked by the day and He had his eye on them. God is holy and righteous and He could not give the land of the Amorites to Moses until the Amorites were hopelessly wicked, beyond remedy. At that point of moral decline, God would destroy the nation of the Amorites and give their and, their houses and groves and vineyards to the Jews and it would be the right thing to do. That’s how it was done.

Fast-forward to the day Jesus was about to show himself to Israel. His brothers did not believe in Him and they were taunting Jesus to go up to Jerusalem to the feast and show Himself to the people. This would have been a dangerous thing to do. Then Jesus said unto them:  My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready. The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.   Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come.  (Joh 7:6-8)

John 9 is about a man in Jerusalem who had been blind from birth. It was time for Jesus to heal him. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?  Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.  (Joh 9:2-3)

Several strange things show up in this story. The disciples bring up a question held by some Jews in that day about being struck blind or some other problem because of sin in the life. But to ask if the man had sinned while in his mother’s womb was strange indeed. How could a baby in the womb sin to be struck blind by the Lord? But Jesus was patient with the question. Neither the man nor his parents had sinned in a bad way. He was blind from birth so that on this day, he could be healed by the hands of the Son of God in a display to a great number of people, including some of the Temple leaders.

The blind man was under the care of his parents but we are told by his mother that he is of legal age and able to answer for himself. So, he could have been 30 years old or older. Notice the timing of this whole thing. He and Jesus meet up on a day to perform a public miracle. It’s in God’s time. This story also displays characteristics of obstinate unbelief. John MacArthur says it well:

“This section in the story of the healing of the blind man reveals some key characteristics of willful unbelief: (1) unbelief sets false standards; (2) unbelief always wants more evidence but never has enough; (3) unbelief does biased research on a purely subjective basis; (4) unbelief rejects the facts; and (5) unbelief is self-centered. John included this section on the dialogue of the Pharisees with the blind man most likely for two reasons: (1) the dialogue carefully demonstrates the character of willful and fixed unbelief, and (2) the story confirms the first great schism between the synagogue and Christ's new followers. The blind man was the first-known person thrown out of the synagogue because he chose to follow Christ (see Joh_16:1-3). (MacArthur)

One other story is worth mentioning here. When Jesus met the Samaritan by the well in John 4, it was a classic story of a well-coordinated time line.  The woman was at the well and Jesus met her there and was alone with her so they could talk privately. Jesus knew about this woman before He went to the well. The timing was in God’s hands.
I daresay that each of us was conceived and born in God’s time. God has a plan for each of our lives and we do well to seek the Lord with the idea of walking with Him and fulfilling His plan daily. You think? Ω

According to the Scriptures…
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:  (1Co 15:3-4)

Some short Bible phrases are mountain peaks of meaning and sturdy sentinels guarding the interpretation of other verses. This is one of them. These two verses are considered by many scholars and teachers as the best definition we have of the Gospel. Christ didn’t just die, He died according to the Old Testament Scriptures. He didn’t just rise again the third day from the grave; He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.

He was buried and that proved that He was dead. Like Lazarus, He was wrapped in grave clothes and coated with about seventy pounds of spices.  When He rose from the dead, His layers of grave clothes were still together as though He were inside them. Paul’s main message was the death and resurrection of Christ.

“First of all,” he said. It wasn’t down in the bag somewhere. It was first of all. It wasn’t something he made up. He received it from the Lord. We must be careful to major on first things. Nothing is as important in the Christian ministry as the death, burial and resurrection of Christ from the grave, according to the Scriptures.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary gives a good summary statement: “Paul included himself in the company of all believers when he spoke of receiving the truth of Christ’s death and His resurrection on behalf of sinful people. These verses, the heart of the gospel, were an early Christian confession which Paul described as of first importance. It was really a twofold confession: Christ died for our sins and He was raised. The reality of this was verified by the Scriptures:

For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell (in the grave); neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.  (Psa 16:10) He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.   And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.   Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.  (Isa 53:8-10)

and by historical evidence verified by time in the grave and out of it, in the presence of the living. The fact that He was buried verified His death, and the fact that He appeared to others verified His resurrection. Peter, the first male witness, was soon joined by the remaining disciples who composed the Lord’s immediate circle.” (BKC)

“According to the Scriptures” means that these Scriptures were written as prophecies and then were fulfilled at some future time. Bible prophecy is one of the great proofs that the Bible is the Word of God. Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:  (Isa 46:9-10)

The higher criticism of liberal scholars since the 17th century (1600’s) employs a bias against the Bible being able to predict the future. This bias handicaps their ability to interpret the Bible as a supernatural book.

Someone wrote: “The New Testament is in the Old contained; and Old Testament is in the New Testament explained. It is surprising how much of the Old Testament is prophesy. We learn this by reading the New Testament, which repeatedly tells us “that it might be fulfilled.” One writer said that there is something like 300 prophecies about the Coming Christ in the Old Testament. We will look at a few of those in future editions of Morning Minute.Ω
