The Six Miracles of Calvary…the Veil
And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom;… (Matthew 27:51)

EVERYONE IN ISRAEL KNEW about the majestic and holy Temple in Jerusalem. (In fact, most of the civilized world knew about the Temple in Jerusalem.) It was one of the wonders of the world. When the sun shined upon the Temple, it was a dazzling sight! They knew that God’s presence was inside the Temple in the room called: “The Most Holy Place,” or “The Holy of Holies.”

THEY ALSO KNEW ABOUT THE GREAT VEIL INSIDE THE TEMPLE, as much as sixty feet high, which, only certain priests had ever seen. It was the invisible treasure of the nation of Israel. Josephus wrote that the veil was: 55 cubits altitude and 16 wide. The curtain was Babylonian, embroidered with blue, and fine linen, and scarlet, and purple. This curtain had also embroidered upon it all that was mystical in the heavens…”

THE VEIL ALLOWED THE HIGH PRIEST to enter the Most Holy Place once a year but prevented all others from entering or seeing the sacred room. Appointed priests could be in the first room, The Holy Place, but were not allowed in the “Most Holy Place/Holy of Holies” beyond the veil.

THE INNER VEIL WAS A TYPE OF CHRIST who was to come and offer Himself to God. On the cross, when He cried out the second time and proclaimed: “It is finished!” the veil in front of the Holy of Holies ripped from top to bottom. It was at the time for the Evening Sacrifice, so several priests were inside the first room and saw the veil rip from top to bottom. No wonder a great many of the priests were “obedient to the faith.” And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith. (Acts 6:7)

THE RENTING OF THE VEIL WAS A MIRACLE! Everyone in Israel knew it was a miracle.

Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God; Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. (Hebrews 10:19-22) Ω

The Six Miracles of Calvary… Darkness

And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. (Luke 23:44-46)

WHAT LITTLE I KNOW; I have learned standing on the shoulders of other men and women. It is profoundly true in selecting the title: The Six Miracles of Calvary, from a book written by William R. Nicholson (January 8, 1822 – June 7, 1901). It was copyrighted 1927 by Moody Bible Institute and first appeared in the Moody Bible Institute Monthly at the hands of James M. Gray, D.D., Editor in Chief. I try to read it every year.

I CARRY THE BOOK WITH ME IN THE CAR and ask everyone who will listen: “Have you read this book?” As soon as possible, I launch into the miracle of the three hours of darkness and move on to the ripping of the 60’ veil that covered the Holy of Holies in the Jewish Temple.

(TWO YEARS AGO, AS I VISITED MY CANCER SURGEON for my annual checkup, I rushed into the book, citing the three hours of darkness that covered Jerusalem and the ripping of the 60’ veil in the Temple. He was quiet.) This year I asked him: “Do you believe Jesus Christ was actually raised from the dead?” “Of course!” I hope he got it…and that it got him. We are seed sowers, not soul savers. Only God can save souls.)

IF THERE'S TIME AND INTEREST, I tell about the graves opening in Jerusalem and the dead people who came out of the graves and showed themselves alive to many people in Jerusalem. On that week, there were over a million Jews in Jerusalem for Passover, gathered from every part of the nation of Israel and from many foreign countries where they were scattered. They were packed inside the city walls and the news of the dead people who had come to life must have quickly traveled through the crowd.

THE DARKNESS, THE EARTHQUAKE, THE OPENING OF THE GRAVES, the rending of the veil, the rising of the dead from the graveyard and the resurrection of Jesus from the grave. These things are the subject of THE SIX MIRACLES OF CALVARY, the centerpiece of human history in condensed form. I never tire of reading in Matthew 27 what God did during those three days of human history. Easter is approaching in ten days!

THE CALVARY MIRACLES WERE FROM HEAVEN. God displayed on those three days an eternal and lasting testimony to every living soul who would hear and be open to an honest encounter with God.

JESUS HAD BEEN ON THE CROSS FOR THREE HOURS beginning at 9:00 a.m. and at high noon, darkness fell upon Jesus on the cross and upon a million-people packed into the city of Jerusalem. This did not happen in a corner. “Over all the earth” or as Matthew states: “over all the land.” “No one can positively say that the darkness did not extend over the daylight half of the globe.” But if the phenomenon was limited to Judea, it was even then sufficiently remarkable. Indeed, in that case, it had a concentration of force like that of the three days of darkness in Egypt, while there was yet light in Goshen. At any rate, the darkness extended over all the land.

IT WAS NOT AN ECLIPSE OF THE SUN. The longest eclipse of the sun can only last slightly over eight minutes, not even nine minutes. Besides that, it occurred at Passover which is always on the season of a full moon. During a full moon, an eclipse of the sun is impossible. The “sun was darkened.” There was a failure of its light. The occasion was not caused by an absence of the sun, which is the cause of our night time. It was darkness at noon time, a darkness in the presence of the sun. It was not caused by the passing of another heavenly body between the sun and the earth.

LIGHT IS THE ANTAGONIST, THE INVADER OF DARKNESS. Darkness does not invade light. And yet, darkness invaded the sun and overcame the brightness of the sun. The darkness of Calvary smothered the light of the noonday sun. “What a trembling conception of the almightiness of God!” The darkness that began the three hours, was the same darkness that concluded the three hours of darkness. During the three hours of darkness, it was as though God the Father had drawn a veil over the suffering of His Son on the cross to obscure Him from the mocking, rebellious eyes of His tormentors.

HIS SUFFERING IN SILENCE COULD NO LONGER BE ENDURED. His suffering had grown more and more intense and we may assume that the darkness may have grown more and more dark, though it does not say. How dark was it? We do not know but it was not merely twilight. It was a frightening darkness and known to over a million people who saw it and no doubt discussed it in sacred, hushed tones.

THE ROMAN CENTURION WAS A BATTLE-HARDENED SOLDIER and he “feared greatly.” Some beat their breasts with intense awe at what they were seeing. One does not “fear greatly” and beat one’s breast in awe because a cloud passes over. It was three solid hours of intense darkness!

A MILLION PEOPLE WOULD GO HOME AND TELL THE STORY the rest of their lives and it would become solid folklore for generations to come. Those who stayed home to tend the cattle and the farms also experienced the darkness for three hours. They would all join hands in telling future generations what took place that day. Ω

Rock of Ages
From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. (Psalm 61:2-3)

WE ARE APPROACHING EASTER and a diminishing number of people know what it’s about. It’s not about the bunny rabbit that “lays eggs” like a chicken. Children need to be taught about the Cross and the resurrection of Christ from the dead. They can take it.

PEOPLE NEED THE LORD! CHILDREN NEED THE LORD! You may think you have everything by the tail without the Christ of Easter. But we are NOT the captain of our fate. It is appointed unto men once to die and after that, the judgement.” (Hebrews 9:27) When you stand there alone with no one to help you, what are you going to tell the Judge of all the Earth? Your bank account will not help you. Your educational degree will not help you.

I HAVE FOUND A STORY AND A SONG that I think will do very well for the occasion, and I’d like to share it with you. Augustus Toplady was traveling along the gorge of Burrington Combe in the Mendip Hills in England. He was a preacher in a nearby village of Blagdon. He was caught in a storm and had no place to go. He found shelter in a gap of the stone wall of the gorge. See the stone above.

AS HE WAITED FOR THE STORM TO PASS, he was struck by the thought of his being safe in the cleft of the massive stone wall. He scribbled down the initial lyrics of the song there, in 1763. The stone is now marked as the “Rock of Ages” and on some maps and is the name of a nearby tea shop. Millions of people have embraced the song for facing God in eternity.

Health Tip:
Antibiotics. “Penicillin antibiotics were among the first (1942) medications to be effective against many bacterial infections caused by staphylococci and streptococci. They are still widely used today, though many types of bacteria have developed resistance following extensive use. (Wikipedia)

Penicillin is thick, uses fat needle, hurts, but somewhat effective. About 10% of the population showed some allergic reaction but that figure is not substantial. There is also a by-mouth version. We now have a rather large family of antibiotics and most of them are given by mouth. Antibiotics work only on bacteria and not on virus—not effective on colds and flu. Some “super anti-biotics” have been developed that are given as an IV.

By comparison, a virus is the size of a baby chicken and goes inside our body cells. A bacterium is the size of a Clydesdale horse and cannot enter a cell. Bacteria can, therefore, be accessed by antibiotics but virus cannot. Antibiotics given as shots, do not seem to interfere with gut bacteria as do the antibiotics given by mouth. Some doctors are sensitive to this problem and some are not.

Talk to your doctor about it. If you take antibiotics by mouth, you may want to consider taking a strong, wide-spectrum pro-biotic for a month or so to reestablish a strong friendly bacterial colony in the gut. Active yogurt can help but must be fed milk products afterward to stay alive. Some probiotic capsules contain bacteria not dependent on milk sugar for survival.

Types and Shadows Leading up to Easter

For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. (Hebrews 10:1)

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4)

EASTER IS THE MOUNTAIN PEAK OF HUMAN HISTORY. It’s about the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and its fulfillment of much Bible prophecy. Christ died on the cross to pay for your sins because all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) The penalty for sin, all sin, is death. (Romans 6:23). But God loves every person He made, and He sent His son to die for the sins of the world. He invites you to acknowledge that you are a sinner, to be sorry for your sins and to accept Christ as your Savior and Lord. (Acts 16:31) (Romans 10:9,10) Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:13.

DO YOU NEED TO BE SAVED? DO YOU WANT TO BE SAVED? Are you wiling to be saved? Get on your knees or bow your head and call upon Him right where you are. Tell Him you are a sinner and need to be saved; that you believe Christ died for you and that you want to accept Him as your Savior and Lord, and that you will serve Him all the days of your life. Mean it from the heart. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. (John 5:24) In a nutshell, this is what Easter is about.

TO MORE FULLY UNDERSTAND EASTER, we must study the mountain upon which Easter rests. You don’t have to know all of that in order to be saved. But if you want to know all that God wants you to know about it, if we would understand the most about Easter, we must know something about Types and Shadows in the Old Testament. At Amazon Books, there are at least 20 books on Types and Shadows of the Old Testament. I would like to read…everyone of them!

SIXTY YEARS AGO, I found, bought, and spent a lot of time studying the big illustrated book: DISPENSATIONAL TRUTH. Its author, Clarence Larkin (1850-1924), was a keen, dedicated Bible student with a degree in mechanical engineering, and was a professional draftsman. He used his developed skill to make charts that displayed Bible truth. You can find his book, free, at https://www.blueletterbible.org/study/larkin/dt/28.cfm. The Blue Letter Bible is an excellent free app for your smart phone.

LARKIN'S BOOK TAUGHT ME MUCH ABOUT THE BIBLE in the shortest amount of time. He had studied the Bible deeply with a keen mind. His book is in the library of thousands of pastors in the English-speaking part of the world. Many other books confirm his views on Bible interpretation. God wants us to be saved and that takes place in a moment of time.

BUT UNDERSTANDING ALL GOD WANTS YOU TO KNOW, after you are saved, will take a lifetime. As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: (1Peter 2:2) But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. (2Peter 3:18)

MR.LARKIN WROTE: “You cannot understand Leviticus without Hebrews, or Daniel without Revelation, or the Passover, or Isaiah 53 without the Gospel account of the Crucifixion. The value of the study of the “Types” and “Antitypes” is the proof they furnish of the Inspiration of the Scriptures. Their study proves beyond question that the Scriptures had but one Author: the HOLY SPIRIT.”

“THE "TYPOLOGY" OF THE OLD TESTAMENT IS THE PICTURE LANGUAGE in which the Doctrines of the New Testament, such as the Atonement, are prefigured. For illustration the “Brazen Serpent: and the Cross” (John 3:14-15) Therefore no preacher or Bible Teacher is competent to preach the doctrines of the New Testament who is not acquainted with the “Typology” of the Old Testament.

“WHAT DO WE MEAN BY "TYPES?" The Apostle Paul gives the answer in 1Corinthians 1:1-11. In verse 11 he says: Now all these things happened unto them for ENSAMPLES (examples, see verse 6) and they are written for our ADMONITION (instruction), upon whom the ends of the world (Age) are come.”

OF "WHOM" AND OF WHAT "THINGS" IS THE APOSTLE SPEAKING? Of the Children of Israel, and the “things” that happened to them from the time of their “Egyptian Bondage” until they reached the “Land of Promise.” So we see that while the Old Testament is a record of the History of the Children of Israel, the events of that “History” are more than mere events; they are “TYPICAL” of the “Plan of Salvation” as revealed in the New Testament, and are neither “mythical” nor “allegorical,” but really happened to Israel and were recorded for our instruction.

“THE WRITER TO THE HEBREWS TELLS US THAT THE "TYPES" are but the SHADOW OF GOOD THINGS TO COME, AND NOT THE VERY IMAGE OF THE THING.” (Hebrews 10:1).
“That is, the Old Testament “Types” are but “SHADOWS.” But there cannot be a “shadow” without some “REAL THING” to make it. And a “shadow” is not the “VERY IMAGE OF THE THING,” for a shadow is out of proportion, and is an imperfect representation of the real thing it reveals.

“SO, THE OLD TESTAMENT TYPES ARE "SHADOWS" in the sense that they are not the “Real Thing,” and are but imperfect revelations of it. A “Type” then is some “person,” or “event,” or “ceremony” that is recorded to “foreshadow” some future “person,” or “event,” or “ceremony.”

TYPICAL PERSONS like Adam, Cain, Abel, Melchizedek, Abraham, Isaac, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, David, Jonah.
TYPICAL EVENTS like the “Flood,” the ”Plagues of Egypt,” the “Passover,” the “Brazen Serpent,” “Crossing the Jordan,” “Cities of Refuge.”
TYPICAL CEREMONIES, like the “Offerings,” “Ceremonial Cleansing,” “Feasts,” “Year of Jubilee,” “Day of Atonement.”

“TO WHICH MIGHT BE ADDED: “TYPICAL STRUCTURES,” like the “Ark,” the “Tabernacle,” the “Temple.” “TYPICAL FURNITURE” like the “Brazen Altar,” the “Laver,” the “Seven Branched Candlestick” the “Table of Shewbread,” the “Altar of Incense,” and the “Ark of the Covenant” with its “Mercy Seat.”

“And, “TYPICAL COLORS,” like “Blue,” “Red,” “White,” “Purple,” “Green.” Add, “TYPICAL NUMBERS,” like “one,” “three,” “twelve,” forty.”

“IN STUDYING THE "TYPES" the two comparative words “AS” and “SO” are forcibly called to our attention. The word “AS” IS USED FOR THE “Type,” and the word “SO” for the Antitype. (Antitype is the fulfillment of the type.) The first is “historic;” the second is “prophetic.” Examples:

“AS” IN ADAM ALL DIE, even SO in Christ shall all be made alive.” (1 Corinthians 15:22) “AS” in the days of Noah were, SO shall also the coming of he Son of Man be.”(Mat.24:37
“AS” Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even SO must the Son of Man be lifted up.” (John 3:14)
“AS” Jonah was three days and three nights in the Whales belly, SO shall the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” (Matthew 12:40)

Clarence Larkin was born in Chester, Pennsylvania, on October 28, 1850. He became born again at the age of 19 and was a member of an Episcopalian church. Larkin graduated from college as a mechanical engineer and became a professional draftsman. He also taught the blind, and later became a manufacturer. From an early age, Larkin felt called to the ministry, but was unable to find a place in the ministry until, at the age of 32, he left the Episcopalian church and became a Baptist. Strangers and Angels – Part 2
Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. (Heb 13:2) Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? (Hebrews 1:14)

“ANGELS" ARE DIVIDED INTO TWO CATEGORIES: 1. Good Angels and 2. Fallen Angels. The Good Angels are appointed by God as ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation. We know the names of two good angels: Michael and Gabriel. We do not know how many angels there are but there are many thousands of them.

FALLEN ANGELS CONTRAST WITH GOOD ANGELS and are headed up by Satan (Lucifer), who is a fallen angel. How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. (Isa 14:12-15)

GOD'S ANGELS AND THE FALLEN ANGELS have been in conflict from the beginning of the rebellion of Satan. Eventually, Satan and his angels will be subdued.

And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. (Rev 12:7-10)

A SURPRISING THING TAKES PLACE in how Michael, the archangel dealt with Satan when they were having a dispute over the body of Moses. Michael did not rebuke Satan.
Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. (Jude 1:9)

I FOUND THIS COMMENT BY McGEE ON THE INCIDENT. It is lengthy, but I couldn’t find a place to cut it off. He says:” This is a most remarkable verse of Scripture. Here is Wuest's very fine translation of it: "Yet Michael, the archangel, when disputing with the devil, arguing concerning the body of Moses, dared not bring a sentence that would impugn his dignity, but said, May the Lord rebuke you."

“SATAN IS A FALLEN CREATURE AND AN AVOWED ENEMY OF GOD, yet Michael, when contending about the body of Moses, would not bring a sentence that would impugn the dignity of Satan. Michael even respected the position of Satan. Clement, one of the early church fathers, quotes from an apocryphal writing dealing with the funeral of Moses.

WHEN MICHAEL WAS COMMISSIONED TO BURY MOSES, Satan opposed it on the grounds that, since he was the master of the material and matter, the body belonged to him. Michael's only answer was, "The Lord [that is, the Creator] rebuke thee." Satan also brought the charge of murder against Moses. Also it is suggested that Satan wanted to hinder the later appearance of Moses at the Mount of Transfiguration.

“LUCIFER WAS A CREATION OF GOD and apparently, the highest creature that God created. And then evil was found in him. Don't think that evil means that he went out and stole something. The evil that was in him was that he put his will against the will of God. He was lifted up by pride, and he wanted to become independent of God.

HE ACTUALLY THOUGHT HE COULD DETHRONE GOD—at least from part of His universe. As far as this world is concerned, God has permitted him to carry on this rebellion, and God has a high and holy purpose in it. But this creature still believes he will be able to take a segment of God's created universe and be the ruler over it. I'm sure that Satan wants this earth as his.

"Yet Michael … durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee." Michael didn't curse Satan. He didn't call him a long list of names. I'm sure that many of us would have been perfectly willing to have done that. We really would have read the riot act to him, but Michael didn't. Do you know why? Michael is an archangel, and all he did was to say, "The Lord rebuke you." He didn't go into a long tirade of epithets or of condemnation, although he could have. Why? Michael had respect unto his office, his position—Lucifer had been created the highest creature.

“THIS IS A LESSON THAT YOU AND I NEED TO LEARN. A great many believers have not learned to bow even to God. My friend, you and I are creatures; He is the Creator. What right have you and I to question anything that He does? Don't misunderstand me. If you think that I piously accept everything that comes my way, you are wrong. I talk back to Him many times, and I want to know why He lets certain things happen to me. Maybe you do that also. But we need to recognize that God is the Creator; He is also our Redeemer. He is the One who loves us.

“BUT OUR GOD IS HIGH, HOLY, AND LIFTED UP. He is a just and righteous God. He never makes any mistakes. He never does anything wrong. Everything He does is right and, therefore, you and I can trust Him. But do we do that? Do we respect His authority? Do we respect His person? In that day when men must give an account, the Lord Jesus Christ is going to say, "You said, 'Lord, Lord,' but you didn't do the things I commanded. Each one went his own way and did that which was right in his own eyes." This is the picture of mankind. How about you? How about me today? What a lesson Michael the archangel is to us! (McGee)

And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee. (1Kings 19:5-7)

●SOMETIMES OUR GREATEST NEED IS TO AWAKEN OUT OF OUR SLEEP.
And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. (Romans 13:11)

●SOMETIMES OUR GREATEST NEED IS THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF AN EARTHLY FRIEND. Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus; (2Corinthians 7:6)

●SOMETIMES OUR GREATEST NEED MAY BE THE HELP OF AN ANGEL: Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 18:10)
It is as though the angels of these little ones will tell God on you if you abuse them. Also implied is that angels represent those who humble themselves before God as children, regardless of age.

●ANGELS ARE APPOINTED BY GOD AS MINISTERING SPIRITS, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation. That should be of great comfort and encouragement to us when we face rough and tough days on our way to Heaven.

Strangers and Angels…
Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. (Heb 13:2) Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? (Hebrews 1:14)

PLEASE NOTE: The angel study is an interruption of our announced Easter series, which should continue next week.

“ANGEL" IN SINGULAR AND PLURAL FORMS occurs about 300 times in the Bible. They are God-created beings that figure large in parts of the Bible. They are organized into groups and hierarchies with leaders. Satan and his followers are angels that rebelled against the authority of God and fell from their place in God’s angel kingdom. Thus, they are “fallen angels.”

NOTE THESE VERSES: And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. (Revelation 12:7-9)

IT WILL TAKE MORE THAN ONE DAY to examine our theme of Strangers and Angels. Some good writing has been done about Angels and I would like to include some samples here. Today’s picture is famous. THERE'S A LOT OF TALK THESE DAYS ABOUT ANGELS but most people have never personally seen an angel, to their knowledge. A close look at the first verse above gives a hint as to why we may not know if we have seen an angel. They don’t always look like the pictures drawn by artists with wings and other-world appearance. Angel simply means “messenger.” Pastors in Revelation 1:20 were called “angel” and yet they were very much human.

BUT THERE IS THAT HEAVENLY MESSENGER that shows up looking every bit like a human being. Jacob wrestled with an angel, which put his hip out of joint and caused him to limp the rest of his life (Genesis 32:24-30). An angel of the Lord killed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night (2Kings 19:35). So, if you are in a tight place and call on the Lord to help you, it wouldn’t be unreasonable that the Lord should send an angel to help you. But don’t expect him to hang around for supper, although that has been done too. We don’t pray to angels for their help. Pray to God and let Him send an angel if that’s what ought to be done.

“ALL THE ANGELS, EVEN THOSE OF THE HIGHEST ORDER, are employed by their Creator to serve those who believe in Christ Jesus. What these services are, and how performed, it would be impossible to state. Much has been written on the subject, partly founded on Scripture, and partly on conjecture. They are, no doubt, constantly employed in averting evil and procuring good.

“IF GOD HELPS MAN BY MAN, we need not wonder that he helps man by angels. We know that he needs none of those helps, for he can do all things himself; yet it seems agreeable to his infinite wisdom and goodness to use them. This is part of the economy of God in the government of the world and of the Church; and a part, no doubt, essential to the harmony and perfection of the whole.” (Adam Clarke: a British Methodist theologian and biblical scholar; died 1832.)

I BELIEVE ANGELS HAVE BEEN ACTIVE IN OUR AREA of Sand Mountain, Alabama for several years. A retired Southern Baptist pastor whom I have personally known for almost thirty years, shared one of his personal stories while we were visiting at a funeral home. His daughter was putting gas in her car at a service station where we have bought gasoline many times.

A BIG CAR PULLED UP A FEW FEET AWAY. One of the men in the car jumped out and grabbed her and was dragging her toward his car. Just as quickly, a truck pulled up and a man jumped out of the truck.

WITH ONE MIGHT BLOW, HE PUT THE BIG MAN ON HIS BACK ON THE CONCRETE and shoved the pastor’s daughter toward her car. “Go!” He said. She got into her car and started the engine. As she looked back, the big man that had been dragging her was getting back into his car and the car sped away. Then she looked for the man who had rescued her and he was nowhere to be seen, nor his truck.”

THIS SAME PASTOR HAD PREVIOUSLY FELT COMPELLED to pick up a hitch-hiker. He witnessed to him and the man replied that he knew the Lord and that Jesus was coming soon. Shortly thereafter, the man wanted to get out of the car, although there were no houses or other roads. He let him out of the car and looked into the rear-view mirror as he pulled away. Nothing. He stopped the car and got out and looked all around and the man had disappeared.

I HAVE LIVED IN FLAT ROCK 32 YEARS and the following stories originated about 15 years ago. During that time, stories spread through the community about two women in Chattanooga who picked up a hitch hiker (against their better judgment). They drove toward Cleveland and talked a few minutes. Suddenly, the man disappeared out of their car. He had told the ladies that the Lord is coming soon.

DURING THE SAME PERIOD A HIGHWAY PATROLMAN went forward in his church on a Sunday morning and asked permission to give his testimony. He had approached a big-rig on the side of the road and the two drivers were looking all around the truck for something. He stopped and they told him: “You’ll never believe this…” they had picked up a hitch hiker and after he talked to them about the Lord, he had disappeared out of the truck. They were looking for him.

THIS SAME STORY WITH SOME VARIATION WAS SPREAD THROUGHOUT THIS AREA and then no more stories. Although some of the stories may have been embellished or changed with the telling of them, I believe an angel was troubling the waters in this area. We should remember that today’s verses from Hebrews are New Testament verses and they are appropriate for the entire church age. Some have entertained angels, unawares. (Hebrews 1:14). Ω

Easter: The Promised One…
And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. (Luke 24:44)

GOD HAD TOLD MOSES: The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; (Deuteronomy 18:15).

JESUS WAS THAT PROPHET. For centuries, the Jewish people had been taught to look for the prophet that should appear among them. The prophecy was repeated in the writings of other prophets who came after Moses.

AFTER JESUS WAS CRUCIFIED AND RISEN FROM THE DEAD, Jesus appeared to two of His discouraged disciples who were walking along the road to Emmaus. Our text today enters the conversation that went on between them.

JESUS QUOTED AND EXPLAINED to these two men some crucial texts of Scripture from Moses, the Prophets and from the Psalms. All three categories of these Scriptures contained prophecies about the one who was to come. If we would understand Easter, we must understand that Easter is rooted in these Old Testament Scriptures located in the writings of Moses, the Prophets, and in the Psalms.

McGEE COMMENTS: “He began with Moses and the prophets. Moses and the prophets had spoken of Him. His death and resurrection had fulfilled their prophecies. I'd love to have been there that evening, listening to Him, wouldn't you? Christ says that there are two things which are essential to the understanding of the Word of God. They are simple but important. First, as verse Luke 24:25 indicates, we must have faith in the Bible. Christ said, "O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken." Pascal said, "Human knowledge must be understood to be believed, but divine knowledge must be believed to be understood."

“I THINK THE BIBLE IS A CLOSED BOOK TO THE CRITIC AND THE INFIDEL. He can learn a few facts, but he misses the message. On the other hand, some simple soul whose heart is turned in humble faith to God will be enlightened by the Holy Spirit of God. The eyes of his understanding will be opened. Great men of the past have come to the pages of Scripture for light and life in the hours of darkness or crisis. It is not smart to ridicule the Bible. The Lord said, "You are a fool not to believe it." I would rather lack sophistication and subtlety than to be a fool.

“THEN THE LORD SAYS THAT THE BIBLE can only be divinely understood. Human intellect is simply not enough to comprehend its truths. Verse Luke 24:45 tells us: "Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures." Then in 1Corinthians 2:14 Paul declares, "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."

“THERE ARE THINGS THAT ARE ABOVE and beyond human comprehension, and only the Holy Spirit of God can make them real to us. Our prayer ought to be, "Open Thou mine eyes that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy Word." We should come with a humble attitude to the Word of God. Just because you read the Bible does not mean that you know it. The Holy Spirit of God will have to make it real to you.” (McGee)

UNDER THE TONGUE IS BETTER for B12 than feet. We need only a small amount of B12 but that small amount is critical. Since I was diagnosed with low stomach acid many years ago (not now), I have taken 1,000 MCG of sub-lingual B-12 once or twice a week for 40 years as an insurance policy. We both take it as insurance against nerve damage and possibly some advantage in energy production. Insurance.

TALKING ABOUT NERVE DAMAGE HERE. Most garden pesticides work by paralyzing the lungs of the insects. That means, paralyzing the nerves in the bugs. For that reason, I do not use bug spray in the garden, except for cabbage worms. (Diapel for cabbage, broccoli, kale, etc. works differently on the worms.) I have had Guillain-Berre’ (French Polio) and cannot afford any more damage to the nerves.

WE EAT A LOT OF BANANAS and try to eat organic. The banana fields are sprayed by low-flying airplanes and unless we eat organic, we are ingesting some of that spray. Coffee beans are also sprayed. Folgers brand of coffee is mountain-grown and has less bug infestation and less insecticide. (Information from the Gerson Institute, cancer treatment.)

IN GARDENING, WE PLANT BEANS EARLY, pick our share and by the time bugs are winning, pull up the beans and let them and the yellow fuzzies dry up on the fence.

        Leading Up to Easter...

Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, (1Peter 1:18-20)

And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him (the anti-Christ), whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. (Revelation 13:8)

And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. (John 17:5)

EASTER IS THE PEAK OF A "PROPHETIC MOUNTAIN" and rests upon its broader base. Every mountain has a broader base upon which its peak rests. Easter is the tallest peak of the tallest mountain in the Bible: the mountain of prophetic promise. It is where everything came to a head and was finished. God’s plan of redemption was finished as He promised to do. And He will finish the same in each of us: Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: (Phlippians 1:6)

EASTER TOOK PLACE ON A LITERAL, GEOGRAPHICAL MOUNTAIN: Mount Moriah, where Abraham built an altar to offer his only son as a sacrifice in obedience to God’s command. And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. (Genesis 22:2)

IT IS WHERE SOLOMON BUILT THE TEMPLE in obedience to God. And he built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD said, In Jerusalem will I put my name. 2Kings 21:4) See also: Exodus 20:24; Deuteronomy 12:5; 2Samuel 7:13; 1Kings 8:29, 1Kings 9:3; Psalm 78:68-69, Psalm 132:13-14

Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount Moriah, where the LORD appeared unto David his father, in the place that David had prepared in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. (2Chronicles 3:1)

MOUNT MORIAH IS IN CONTRAST TO MOUNT SINAI/HOREB in the wilderness where God came down and gave His law to Moses written in stone by the finger of God. And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God. (Exodus 31:18)

MOUNT SINAI (also called Mount Horeb) is where God met with Israel in perfect holiness, above them and quite removed from them because of their sinful and defiant nature and their reluctance to obey God. It was the mountain of the holiness of God and the death of man. It had been going on since the day of Adam: Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (Romans 5:12)

MOUNT CALVARY/MOUNT MORIAH is where God, Himself, paid the price of death for the sins of the world and thus made peace with anyone who will come to Him in true repentance acceptance of Christ as Savior and Lord. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Rom 6:23)

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (Romans 10:9-10)

THERE IS COMING A NEW HEAVEN AND NEW EARTH: And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. (Revelation 21:1-3)

PETER SAID: Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. (2Peter 3:13)

Health Tip:
Drinking Water. I was having a series of weekly, four-hour, IV EDTA treatments to clean out my arteries. My kidneys were 60% blocked. Dr. Rozema was coaching me as well as treating me. I complained that I was having to get up at night for nothing. He said: “When your bladder wakes you up to go to the bathroom and you produce only a spoon full, you’re not drinking enough water. Your urine is so concentrated that it’s burning your bladder and urethra.”

I HAD QUIT DRINKING WATER water at late afternoon so I wouldn’t be getting up for a bathroom break. Not good. He said: “Before going to bed, you need to drink enough water to prevent your urine from concentrating. If you drink enough water to get up, it won’t take long, and it won’t burn you.” It cost me a hundred dollars to learn that. I saved money by not having to learn it twice. Every time I don’t have to learn that again, I make a hundred dollars. That’s the way it works. Ω

Preparing for Easter…
But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. (Romans 8:11)

IN ISRAEL AND JUDAH, the day before the Sabbath was a very busy day. I searched a good bit for information concerning this day and found it in Wiki Books. My reason for making the search was an awareness that there is a real need for us to do more than observe a day of Easter. We need to think it through and make some meaningful preparation for Easter.

IT'S NOT ABOUT THE EASTER BUNNY THAT LAYS EGGS. As much fun as an Easter Egg Hunt is, that’s really not what Easter is about. The Easter Egg Hunt is a fictional fun thing for little kids and especially for their parents. But, if that’s what Easter is about, we may have shot ourselves in the foot.

EASTER IS ABOUT JESUS THE CHRIST rising from the dead. It’s the climax of a long drama of things that fulfilled prophecy about the ‘Coming One” that Moses talked about and all the prophets talked about. But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled. Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. (Acts 3:18,21)

“THE QUALITY OF AN OCCASION and the success of it is often determined by the amount of preparation that goes into it. In the scripture, the day before the onset of Shabbat is called "Preparation Day" (Mark 15:42; Luke 23:54; John 19:31). To be able to keep the Sabbath properly, adequate preparation is necessary which means planning ahead. Preparation to avoid working on the day and have it free from work-related activities, needs to be done on the Friday.

“THE CONCERN OF OUR LOVING HEAVENLY FATHER embraced both the male and female in their respective need of rest when He ordained the Sabbath, instructing that not only should there be no 'work' but also no lighting of fires which was the means of cooking and heating for the home in those days. He thus encompassed both male and female roles in the household.

“THE NECESSARY PREPARATION involves preparing special meals in advance, organizing the Sabbath artifacts, cleaning, and most of all, arranging our schedules for prayer and time together. Friends and relatives may need to be advised of your intention to keep the Sabbath to avoid them embarrassment or offence if they expect continuance of previously accepted activities on the day.” (Wiki Books)

THE ABOVE SUGGESTIONS HAD TO DO WITH THE JEWISH observance of a “preparation day.” We do not keep a Jewish sabbath, but we may pick up some things to think about as we prepare to celebrate Easter Sunday.

DURING THE MONTH OF APRIL we can take the time to do some serious reading and reflection on the events leading up to Easter. Barbara and I just finished reading the book of Matthew. We slowed down when we came to chapter 27 & 28 and read the verses carefully and read a lot of commentary. Searching the end of all the Gospels gives us the picture. We do this every year, as though we had never done it before. We want to come away with a fresh and meaningful exposure of the facts leading up to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.

IN MORNING MINUTE, we plan to spend several days looking at Easter. I hope you will write Romans 8:11 on a card or scrap of paper and carry it in your pocket or tape it to your computer or refrigerator. Go over it several times during the day, every day until Easter. Ω

B-Vitamins Balance. In 1965 Adelle Davis, wrote: “To meet the demands of stress—and health can never be restored until they are met—the starting point is to obtain all nutrients necessary for the production of the pituitary and adrenal hormones. A combination of vitamins which I have found to give excellent results and believe should be obtained during every illness or severe stress. We might call it the anti-stress formula.

Because these vitamins dissolve in water, they are readily lost in the urine; hence greater improvement occurs when small amounts are taken frequently rather than larger quantities at one time. Vitamin B2 is essential for the synthesis of adrenal hormones, but if given alone, a vitamin B6 deficiency is produced.”

I bought the hardback book new not long after it came out in 1965. The daily amount for some of them are in milligrams and some in micro-grams. You can buy a 50-everything or a 100-everything. (B-complex) I usually go for the 50-everything. What your body does not use, it must get rid of within a day. So, an excess, unnecessarily loads your kidneys and irritates the urine tubing.

It is not an exact science. One of the B-vitamins makes very yellow urine until it is flushed out and it has its own odor. I strongly recommend that you get your own used copy of Adelle Davis’ book: “Let’s Get Well.” Chapter 20 is entitled: “Kidney Stones Can Be Dissolved.”

I had my kidney stones after I bought the book but before I had read over to chapter 20. While I was home recovering from the hospital visit and morphine shots, I spotted the book in a book shelf beside the bed and came across the kidney stone chapter.

Some people produce oxalic acid because of a deficiency of Vitamin B6 and Magnesium. (250 mg.) The oxalic acid is the heart of making the “most popular” kidney stones. The magnesium needs to be balanced with an equal amount of calcium citrate. That was 50 years ago, and for 50 years, Dan has been taking a daily low dose of balanced B vitamins and at least 250 mg of magnesium citrate (a form of magnesium preferred over magnesium carbonate).

If you have kidney stones in your family, the above is worth trying. You also may want      to collect all of Adelle Davis’ books in paperback, used and read them. Some are out of date, but the background knowledge from these books is gold. Ω
