The Packet 22

Introduction and Explanation
(Scroll Down to Open Verse Files)

The King James Bible is made up of 31,173 verses and 1,189 chapters. The good news is that we don't need to memorize the whole Bible. One percent of the verses would be 312 verses. One percent of the chapters would be 12 chapters. Is that a reasonable long-term goal for memorizing? Twelve chapters plus  312 verses. Two verses a month would give you 300 verses in 12 years and that's enough to salt you down pretty good and give you something worthwhile to pass along to people you meet every day.

One chapter a year will give you 12 chapters in 12 years. Brother Roloff gave me a copy of his "60 Chapters in 60 Months" plan and I included it in the book: Paul Ferguson the Fighter. You may want to look at it and pick out chapters that fit you but don't limit yourself to that. As you read and study your Bible, be on the lookout for chapters and verses to memorize during your lifetime. Put an "M" beside the verse or chapter and circle it.

THE PACKET 22 - is a basic Bible memory course of eight groups of verses.  Each group contains 16 verses each. It is in CARD form and PAGE form. (A verse may be one verse or a set of 2-3 verses.) Everything is in PDF format so that most computer programs will be able to open the files. The INTRODUCTION is a "sampler" of several subjects. Each of the remaining 7 groups focuses on a single subject. In PAGE form, a complete set of 16 verses is on a single 8 1/2 x 11 page. In contrast, CARD form  contains two pages of 8 verses per page for each group of cards.

PAGE FORM is ideal for printing onto 20# paper so that the page can be folded in half and inserted into a personal Bible. All  the memory and review work can be done from the page. This is ideal for use in a Sunday school class and is the cheapest way with the least labor in printing verses. A COMPLETE GROUP (16 verses) is on one side of each page. A SECOND GROUP of verses can be printed on the back of the page if the paper does not bleed through excessively. I suggest using light blue, light green, light pink or light yellow paper. The entire PACKET 22 can be printed front-and-back on just four pages and many Bibles will tolerate this much stuffing without damage to the Bible. You can order paper or cover stock from Staples.com. SUMMARY: Pages are cheaper to print, ideal for classroom sharing and involvement, suitable for carrying in a personal Bible, and allow fast reading and  fast scanning of a large number of verses.

CARD FORM is the best form for focusing on individual verses and for carrying a verse or two in the shirt pocket or posting on the bathroom mirror or work station. For learning new verses, cards are better. Cards are also a good tool for engaging people in a verse, i.e. "Would you listen to my verse and see if I get it right?" Cards have long been the choice tool for memorizing verses in classes at Bible colleges. You can cut blank cards from cover stock and write with a medium black ball point pen. OR cut a pack of 3x5 cards (with lines on one side) in half and write verses by hand. An old typewriter is good for typing verses on 3 x 5 half-cards. SUMMARY: Cards are flexible, durable, handy, productive and lend themselves to pocket carrying, posting, and are a prime tool for evangelism.

STARTER CARD REFERENCES and WORDS is a unique card containing the references and first few words of 16 verses in the INTRODUCTION group of verses. Words are on one side and the corresponding reference is on the other side. Words and References are numbered 1-16. The most difficult part of learning and reviewing verses is recalling the first few words. If you can remember the verse, where is it found?  If you see the reference, what are the first few words of the verse? After you have memorized the 16 verses, carry the STARTER CARD in your pocket or purse or day planner.

Eventually, memorize the references 1-16 and be able to say the verse with each reference. You will notice that lines 1,4,7,10,&13 are in blue. The list of references are broken into 3's. Memorize 3 references, and 3 more and 3 more. The blue reference is your starting place for each 3. Carry this card with you and work on it for several months. Back away from it a few months and then come back to it. The INTRODUCTION verses are the heart of THE PACKET 22 and the STARTER CARD will help to make these verses the heart of your entire memory program. You can cut cover stock the size of this card (6 per sheet) and by hand, can make a STARTER CARD for each of the other groups, OR, any group of verses you may want to give the advantage of the STARTER CARD. IT WORKS!

WRITING YOUR VERSES - WRITING PADS - WHITE BOARDS. Write new verses several times every day. Buy a package of writing pads and scatter them around the house and in the car (use while waiting on someone). Three rules for writing verses: 1. Write.  2. Write.  3. Write. Write a verse then turn the pad upside down so you can't see what you just wrote. Turn the pad each time you write the verse.  Tear it off, write on the back side; wad it up and throw away. Writing verses on 5 x 8 writing pads is about as good as it gets. The small white kitchen board with wet marker and eraser (Walmart, Staples) is similar in theory to the slate boards used in the 1800's. The slate boards worked. The white boards will work.

THE EXERCISE SHEET. We have included an "Exercise Sheet" on Deut. 6:6,7 to demonstrate what can be done if you are so inclined and it is worth the effort in your situation. The idea is good for class participation with an overhead projector or in paper form for students. But the ink and copy paper make it more expensive than writing on writing pads. Some may want to use the small white board with an eraser.   Using cards and teaching students to break the verse into phrases will produce well.  But the exercise sheet may appeal to some and some class settings will profit from it.

WHY THE NAME: THE PACKET 22?   The process of deciding "which subjects" and "which verses" produced several versions. To distinguish these versions in the computer required a different name for each. Finally, it was called: "The Packet." Then it was "The Packet2." At last it was called "The Packet 22" and we left it at that. Someday we may publish The Packet 33 but that would be only after we get a lot of feedback from people who are into Packet 22. Thank you for your involvement and for your feedback.

PLEASE NOTE that as you open each of the PDF files below, they are set to fill one 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper or cover stock on your computer printer with 1/2" margins instead of 1" margins. Because we divided the page into card-size "pages" we had to tweak the margins as small as we could get them. Default margins are 1". We reduced the margins to 1/2". Your program may balk at that and warn you that you have gone over the margin limit. Try proceeding and see if your printer will print with the 1/2" margin. Our Windows Vista and Windows 7 with Microsoft 2007 and Microsoft 2010 will allow us to print with the 1/2" margin. Our printers: HP1200 and HP1600 print this OK.

We remind you: DO NOT use CARD STOCK. Please use COVER STOCK, which is about half as thick as card stock and will not wreck your printer like card stock will. Some printers are made to use CARD STOCK but most printers are not. Card stock is about 110# weight and cover stock is 65-70# weight. The feed rollers on your printer will certainly know the difference. I prefer the light yellow color cover stock. Black ink on yellow cover stock makes a nice view for your eyes and is easy to spot if lost in a pile of white paper. Studies on billboards show that the most attractive colors are dark brown on yellow background. Second choice is black on yellow.

AT THE BOTTOM OF SOME OF THE CARDS OR PAGES, there may be the words: "Download free verses at www.biblewalking.com" in small font size 8 or 9. If you want to use the verses without that caption, please contact me through www.biblewalking.com and I will email you a Microsoft Word version that will allow you to remove the caption without disturbing the rest of the verse. If the verse is disturbed, it may shatter. We only use Microsoft Publisher for formatting.

This is a good place to warn you that people will not succeed at Bible memorization simply because you put good materials into their hands. The average person has a well-meaning tendency to take stuff home and put it in a drawer or bookcase and never look at it again. Someone will have to be a faithful, persistent, gentle leader in finding a few faithful people who will discipline themselves to work at memorizing for the long haul.

DOWNLOADING VERSES. Open up the pdf file you want to download, then click on your file tab and "save as" or however your program works. It may say "select all." You may have to right-click on the opened document (anywhere) to find your "save as." To save this page, right-click and on the little drop-down window, click on "save as" or "select all."Save it to a folder you set up: BIBLE VERSES. From there you should be able to print it any time you need to. When you click on "print," you may need to look for the "make it fit" or "fill the page" to make it work. Our memory cards are set for nonstandard 1/4" margins and 1/2" gutters (the center margin). Your printer will probably do a 1/4" margin. It's your computer that you may have to talk to.

CONCENTRATE on the INTRODUCTORY verses and the STARTER CARD. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.  (2 Timothy 2:2)
