Loving You and Protecting Me
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.  (John 13:34-35)
Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD. (Leviticus 19:18)

THE BIBLE IS MADE UP OF 1,189 CHAPTERS AND 31,173 VERSES (K. JAMES VERSION). Many men and women have given their lives to translate it, print it, preach it, distribute it and live by it. For hundreds of years it has been the best-selling book in the world. Why? What is so different and great about this book that so many men and women have given and continue to give their lives for it?

R.A. TORREY GAVE US THIS 100 YEARS AGO: “It claims to be the Word of God; it seems to be the Word of God; it proves to be the Word of God.” (Torrey) It is the only book that accurately tells the future. Its central theme is about the “Coming One,” and the “One Who Came,” and the “One Who Is Coming Again.”

THE BIBLE TELLS US HOW TO GET TO HEAVEN and how to live on the way to Heaven. It has the reputation for teaching and empowering men, women and children to bend themselves toward holy living and toward loving one another. It does not make us perfect, but it does a marvelous job of turning us toward perfection and in a new direction.

“THE STORY HAS OFTEN BEEN TOLD ABOUT THE MESSAGE the founder of the Salvation Army sent to their international convention. General William Booth was unable to attend personally because of ill health, so he cabled the delegates a message containing one word: “OTHERS!”

“IN THE POPULAR COMIC STRIP "PEANUTS," Lucy asks Charlie Brown, “Why are we here on earth?” He replies, “To make others happy.” She ponders this for a moment and then asks, “Then why are the others here?”

“ONE ANOTHER: IS ONE OF THE KEY PHRASES in the Christian’s vocabulary. “Love one another” is found at least a dozen times in the New Testament, along with “pray one for another” (James_5:16), “edify one another” (1Thessalonians_5:11), prefer one another (Romans_12:10), “use hospitality one to another” (1Peter_4:9), and many other like admonitions.

“IN THE SECTION BEFORE US, Paul adds another phrase: “Bear ye one another’s burdens” (Galatians_6:2). The Spirit-led Christian thinks of others and how he can minister to them.” (Warren Wiersbe)

“A NEW COMMANDMENT - This command he gave them as he was about to leave them, to be a badge of discipleship, by which they might be known as his friends and followers, and by which they might be distinguished from all others. It is called new, not because there was no command before which required people to love their fellow-man, for one great precept of the law was that they should love their neighbor as themselves Leviticus 19:18; but it was new because it had never before been made that by which any class or body of people had been known and distinguished. The Jew was known by his external rites, by his uniqueness of dress, etc.; the philosopher by some other mark of distinction; the military man by another, etc.

“IN NONE OF THESE CASES HAD LOVE FOR EACH OTHER been the distinguishing and special badge by which they were known. But in the case of Christians they were not to be known by distinctions of wealth, or learning, or fame; they were not to aspire to earthly honors; they were not to adopt any special style of dress or badge, but they were to be distinguished by tender and constant attachment to each other.

“THIS WAS TO SURMOUNT ALL DISTINCTION OF COUNTRY, OF COLOR, OF RANK, OF OFFICE, OF SECT.  Here they were to feel that they were on a level, that they had common wants, were redeemed by the same sacred blood, and were going to the same heaven. They were to befriend each other in trials; be careful of each other’s feelings and reputation; deny themselves to promote each other’s welfare. See 1John 3:23; 1Thessalonians 4:9; 1Peter 1:22; 2Thessalonians 1:3; Galatians 6:2; 2Peter 1:7.

“IN ALL THESE PLACES THE COMMAND OF JESUS IS REPEATED OR REFERRED TO, and it shows that the first disciples considered this indeed as the special law of Christ. This command or law was, moreover, new in regard to the extent to which this love was to be carried; for he immediately adds, “As I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” His love for them was strong, continued, unremitting, and he was now about to show his love for them in death. John 15:13; “greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

“SO IN 1JOHN 3:16 IT IS SAID THAT “we ought also to lay down our lives for the brethren.” This was a new expression of love; and it showed the strength of attachment which we ought to have for Christians, and how ready we should be to endure hardships, to encounter dangers, and to practice self-denial, to benefit those for whom the Son of God laid down his life. (Barnes)

THE SHORT PART OF OUR THEME , TODAY: “Loving You and Protecting Me” is this: when should I protect myself from death instead of dying for His namesake?”  In Jesus’ day, the question for the disciples was: “What if someone tries to rob me at night while I’m sleeping under a tree and will probably kill me to keep me quiet?”

WARREN WIERSBE OFFES A REASONABLE EXPLANATION: And he that hath no sword – “There has been much difficulty in understanding why Jesus directed his disciples to arm themselves, as if it was his purpose to make a defense. It is certain that the spirit of his religion is against the use of the sword, and that it was not his purpose to defend himself against Judas. But it should be remembered that these directions about the purse, the scrip, and the sword were not made with reference to his “being taken” in the garden, but with reference “to their future life.”

“THE TIME OF THE TRIAL IN GETHSEMANE WAS JUST AT HAND; nor was there “time” then, if no other reason existed, to go and make the purchase. It altogether refers to their future life. They were going into the midst of dangers. The country was infested with robbers and wild beasts. It was customary to go armed. He tells them of those dangers - of the necessity of being prepared in the usual way to meet them.

“THIS, THEN, IS NOT TO BE CONSIDERED AS A SPECIFIC, POSITIVE "COMMAND" to procure a sword, but an intimation that great dangers were before them; that their manner of life would be changed, and that they would need the provisions “appropriate to that kind of life.” The “common” preparation for that manner of life consisted in money, provisions, and arms; and he foretells them of that manner of life by giving them directions commonly understood to be appropriate to it.

“IT AMOUNTS, THEN, TO A "PREDICTION" THAT THEY WOULD SOON LEAVE THE PLACES which they had been accustomed to, and go into scenes of poverty, want, and danger, where they would feel the necessity of money, provisions, and the means of defense. All, therefore, that the passage justifies is:

1.THAT IT IS PROPER FOR PEOPLE TO PROVIDE  for their wants, and for ministers and missionaries as well as any others.
2. THAT SELF-DEFENSE IS LAWFUL." (Warren Wiersbe)

       Inconvenient Human Life
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.  (John 8:44)

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: (1Peter 5:8)

HOW IS IT POSSIBLE, TODAY, that a grown man with a fairly good education (as we think of education) will take a gun and shoot down a group of innocent people at the Tree of Life Jewish Synagogue in Philadelphia that he doesn’t know? Is he sick or evil or both? Millions of people in America, religious and not-so-religious go through life rubbing shoulders with each other without a thought of killing anyone.

IN MY OPINION, THE SURGE OF VIOLENCE WE ARE SEEING IN AMERICA comes straight out of the culture of death we have created in murdering 60-million innocent babies in the wombs of their mothers since 1973. Every baby that’s murdered, requires the signature of its mother on a form given her by the doctor or nurse. So, 60-million people have signed a death warrant for another human being in America since 1973.

THAT IS WIDE-SPREAD PARTICIPATION IN THE PRACTICE OF MURDERING PEOPLE as a convenience. If it’s ok to kill little, innocent people out of convenience, then there’s less problem in killing someone if you hate them or get mad at them. I also believe that the Devil (who is a real person and has awesome power) is driving many people to murder people.

THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT MAKE MOTHERS KILL THEIR BABIES. The government gives the mother of the child the freedom to murder her baby if she decides to have it done. We are killing inconvenient human life. Hitler’s people in NAZI Germany killed 300,000 “useless bread eaters” before they began killing Jews. The government sent vans to the houses to pick up people during the night. They got rid of sick and handicapped Germans who were no longer able to work. I just did a Google search and came up with this.

BREITBART NEWS AGENCY REPORTS: "Crime statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) show that more people were killed with hammers and clubs than with rifles of every kind in 2017. "According to the
Uniform Crime Report, (click on the link and see the report) 467 people were killed with “blunt objects (hammers, clubs, etc.),” while 403 were killed were rifles. The FBI report also reveals that 692 people were killed with “personal weapons” like “hands, fists, feet, etc..” and that is higher than the number of people killed with rifles and shotguns combined.
https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2018/09/26/fbi-people-killed-hammers-clubs-rifles-every-kind/

LET ME MAKE IT CLEAR that Breitbart is not my favorite news agency. I don’t carry water for them. But, neither is the New York Times, Washington Post, and Politico and others. But I still read/scan them. Some of the “fact finding” sites such as Snopes must be taken with a grain of salt. I scan several leading papers on both sides of the political spectrum as it fits my purpose for the day.

DURING ONE TRIP TO WASHINGTON I visited the Newseum that has the front page of 745 leading newspapers posted and you can get them online. http://www.newseum.org/todaysfrontpages/   I don’t have time to scan 745 newspapers, but I do like to keep up with the general trend of news by scanning a wee bit. For political opinion, I like the Jewish World Review which features about 90 leading political writers. I do miss Charles Krauthammer. You can research some things at the Congressional Library https://www.loc.gov/rr/main/research/ .

MILLIONS OF PEOPLE IN AMERICA OWN GUNS WHO DON'T SHOOT ANYONE. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2015 there were 320 million people in America and 265 million guns.  There are 112.6 guns per 100 residents. I must point out that, while the U. S. Census tries hard to count people and other things in the United States, it is at best an estimate. I do not believe everyone who has a gun is going to tell the U. S. Census Bureau that they have a gun. Americans simply do not trust their government that well.

IT IS GENERALLY AGREED THAT THERE ARE ABOUT 300 MILLION GUNS owned by law-abiding citizens. Some claim that the people own something like 40 trillion rounds of ammunition. The states and cities that have some of the most stringent gun control laws have the greatest rate of gun murders, such as Chicago.

SEVERAL YEARS AGO, I WAS DOING SOME READING on the activities of the Japanese War Lords prior to World War II.  Yamamato, who was trained in the United States, had become one of the men in that circle. When they were planning to bomb the U. S. Naval Fleet anchored in Pearl Harbor, some of the Japanese war lords were suggesting that when they were through bombing Pearl Harbor, they should have troop ships ready on the shoreline of California and mount an invasion. That was in 1941.

YAMAMATO ADAMANTLY OPPOSED THE IDEA. He told them: “In America, there’s a gun behind every blade of grass and you don’t want to tangle with such a highly armed nation of people.” Today, there are more Americans and more guns.

OK, I'VE STRAYED FROM MY SUBJECT. But I must make the point here that the hearts of people become wicked and they are willing to kill people out of hatred, guns or no guns. Hands, feet and fists kill more people than all the rifles and shotguns combined.

ROAD RAGE TAKES A TOLL. “According to a study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety that examined police records nationally, there are more than 1,200 incidents of road rage on average reported per year in the United States, a number of which have ended with serious injuries or even fatalities.”

BOTTOM LINE: The devil urges: “If you get in the way of what I want, I will kill you!” Cain killed his brother Abel with his anger (Genesis 4:5,8). If a man is angry and has no regard for human life, he will kill you. Give the devil credit where credit is due: he works hard at driving people to kill each other.

Feast of Tabernacles – Summary

In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive:(in 50 days on Pentecost) for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)  (John 7:37-39)

JESUS CRIED OUT ON THE LAST DAY OF THE FEAST OF TABERNACLES, projecting Himself to be the water poured out during this Feast.  The Old Testament is full of types and shadows that portray future events and that give meaning to words and phrases in the Biblical texts. Readers who don’t know this feature of the Bible, miss out on a gold mine of meaning. Warren Wiersbe, author of The Wiersbe Bible Commentary (Old Testament), gives us some good facts and commentary on Leviticus 23 and a few other related Old Testament references.

“THE JEWS WORKED FROM SUNRISE TO SUNSET, counted the months by the phases of the moon, and watched the seasons come and go. God had promised them “seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat and summer and winter, and day and night” (Genesis 8:22), and they were content. Each day was a sacred gift from God.

“THE JEWISH CALENDAR “…was tied to the rhythm of the seasons and the history of the nation. It not only summarized what God had done for them in the past, but it also anticipated what God would do for them in the future. The salvation work of Jesus Christ, the founding of the church, and the future of the people of Israel are all illustrated in these seven feasts. (The church is not mentioned in the Old Testament, but it is included in the types and shadows.dc)

“THE WEEKLY SABBATH WASN'T ONE OF THE ANNUAL FEASTS (Exodus 20:8-11), but it was an important day for the Jewish people, and they were expected to honor it. To dishonor it meant death (Numbers 15:32-36).

“GOD GAVE THE SABBATH TO ISRAEL FOR SEVERAL REASONS. For one thing, it provided needed rest and refreshment for the people, the farm animals, and the land. (“Sabbath” comes from a Hebrew word that means “to rest, to cease from labor.”) Based on Genesis 2:1-3, the weekly Sabbath reminded the Jews that Jehovah God was the Creator and they were but stewards of His generous gifts The Lord also ordained Sabbath years and the Year of Jubilee to keep the Jews from exploiting the land and impoverishing it (Leviticus 25). God’s tender concern for His creation is seen in the Sabbath laws.

“THE SABBATH WAS ALSO A SPECIAL SIGN BETWEEN GOD AND HIS COVENANT PEOPLE (Exodus 31:12-17). Other peoples might work on the seventh day and treat it like any other day, but the Israelites rested on the seventh day and thereby gave witness that they belonged to the Lord (Nehemiah 13:15-22; Isaiah 58:13-14). Nehemiah made it clear that the Sabbath law wasn’t given to Israel until they arrived at Sinai (Nehemiah 9:13-14), while Psalm 147:19-20 indicates that the law was never given to the Gentile nations.

ALTHOUGH BELIEVERS TODAY AREN'T COMMANDED “remember the Sabbath Day” (Romans 14:1ff; Colossians 2:16-17), the principle of resting one day in seven is a good one.  “…the New Testament offered no support for transferring Sabbath practices or regulations to Sunday. It simply declared Sunday as the day the followers of Christ meet in honor of His resurrection.”
https://questions.org/attq/do-the-sabbath-requirements-of-old-testament-law-carry-over-to-sunday-2/

“THE FEAST OF TABERNACLES  is the last feast of the annual seven Feasts of the Lord. It was a seven-day feast that usually occurred in October. The Jews who observed this celebration, erected little “huts” or “booths” from bulrushes as a reminder of the temporary housing the traveling Jews erected after they came out of Egypt.” (A feast in this setting is not eating. It is a meeting. dc)

A BULRUSH WAS A TALL AQUATIC (IN WATER) PLANT in the Nile valley. Papyrus. The Egyptians cut it into strips to write on it. The traveling Jews used it to make little shelters for themselves as they traveled through that region.

THE CELEBRATION OF THE Feast of Tabernacles included hanging samples of the fall crop in their little booth to depict what they had to eat and to show that God faithfully provided food for them during their journey. Each day of the Feast was filled with important festivity.

(Following quotes are from “The Feasts of the Lord,” p.30-31, by Kevin Howard and Marvin Rosenthal.)

“EACH DAY, THE HIGH PRIEST OF ISRAEL, in a great processional made up of priests and tens of thousands of worshipers, descended from the Temple Mount to pause briefly at he Pool of Siloam. A pitcher was filed with water, and the procession continued via a different route back to the Temple Mount. Here, in the midst of great ceremony, the High Priest poured the water out of the pitcher onto the altar.

“IN ISRAEL, THE RAINS NORMALLY STOP IN MARCH, and there is no rain for almost seven months. If God does not provide the “early” rains in October and November, there will be no spring crop, and famine is at the doorstep. This ceremony, then, was intended to invoke God’s blessing on the nation so that He might provide life-giving water.

“IT IS IN CONNECTION WITH THE FEAST OF TABERNACLES that the Gospel of John records a fascinating event. John wrote: “on the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” (John 7:37-38). The Son of God was saying in the clearest possible way that He alone was the source of life and blessing – that He could meet every need of the human heart.

“THE FEAST OF TABERNACLES SPEAKS ELOQUENTLY of the messianic Kingdom—of a new beginning without the ravages of the curse of sin.  In that day, the earth will give her full bounty, all animals will be docile, armies will no longer march, every man will sit under his own fig tree, and righteousness will become a reality in the earth.

“FIFTEEN HUNDRED YEARS BEFORE THE BIRTH OF THE MESSIAH, the seven feasts foretold, in type, the major redemptive works of His life. The four spring feasts related to His first coming: His death was depicted in Passover; that His body would not decay in the grave is seen in Unleavened Bread; His resurrection is illustrated in Firstfruits; and the commencement of the Church and the New Covenant is typified in the Feast of Weeks.

“THE THREE FALL FEASTS PORTRAY EVENTS TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH his second coming. The Feast of Trumpets depicts the Rapture of the Church. The Day of Atonement points to a great host of people, Jews and Gentiles, who will be saved when they see Him coming and appropriate the benefits of His death. The Feast of Tabernacles speaks of the day when the Messiah Himself will tabernacle among men, wipe away every tear, and bring in the utopian age or golden age” of which men have dreamed since time immemorial.

“ONLY A GOD WHO IS OMNISCIENT COULD HAVE FORETOLD these astounding events. The fool denies His existence; the man of pride effuses to accept His gracious provision of life. Time is running out --- the trumpet blast will soon be heard around the world announcing His coming.”

I HOPE YOU WILL STUDY “The Feasts of the Lord” in more detail. We only have room here to introduce the subject and point to a much richer study. I never tire of studying the way the Old Testament is laid out in such simple but subtle ways, only to find it resurfacing in the New Testament in the writings of the gospel writers, the epistles and the Book of Revelation. “The New is in the Old contained; The Old is in the New explained.”

THE BIBLE, OLD AND NEW TESTAMENT, was written by Jews and they were the caretakers of these writings. God put the Jew first in giving the Word of God to the world. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.  (Romans 1:16) But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:  (Romans 2:10)

sevens in scripture

   Sevens in Scripture…

So the people rested on the seventh day.  (Exodus 16:30)

THE NUMBER, "SEVEN," he number, “seven”, occurs in the King James Bible 463 times. “Seventh” occurs 120 times. If we notice the way the number is used in the Bible, it can teach us.  “Seven” is the biblical number for perfection and completion. After creating the world, God rested on the seventh day. He did not rest because of growing tired—omnipotence (all-powerfull) does not grow tired, and God is omnipotent.  Rather, God rested in the sense of completion and satisfaction. What God created was good and satisfying --- nothing else was needed. Therefore, He rested on the seventh day.

● “ON THE SEVENTH DAY OF THE WEEK, the children of Israel were to observe a Sabbath rest, patterned after God’s creation rest. They were to rest from all their labors (Exodus 16:23,30).

● “THE SEVENTH MONTH OF THE YEAR IS, according to the Scriptures, especially holy. In that month, all three fall feasts are observed (Leviticus 23:24, 27, 34).

● “THE NATION OF ISRAEL WAS COMMANDED TO REFRAIN FROM FARMING the ground every seventh year – to allow the soil to rest (Leviticus 25:4).

● “SEVENTY SEVENS OF YEARS WERE COUNTED (forty-nine years), and then the next year (the fiftieth) was to be the Jubilee year in which all debts were forgiven and all slaves set free (Leviticus 25:8-12).

● “SEVENTY SEVENS OF YEARS WERE "DETERMINED" upon the Jewish people during which time God would bring to perfection and completion His redemptive purposes (Daniel 9:24-27).

● “THE BOOK OF REVELATION RECORDS THE CONSUMMATION OF THIS AGE.  It uses the number seven more than fifty times. Significantly, the book revolves around seven seals, seven trumpets, and seven bowls (Revelation 5:1,5; 6:8-9; 11:15-19; 15-16).

“THE SEVEN FEASTS OF THE LORD, then, are His “appointed times” during which He will meet with men for holy purposes. When completed, the seven holidays will bring this age to a triumphant end and usher in the “Golden Age: to follow.  During that age, every man will sit under his own fig tree (Micah 4:4). That concept is not intended to suggest boredom or a lack of creativity and activity, but completion and satisfaction.

“FOUR OF THE SEVEN HOLIDAYS OCCUR IN THE SPRING OF THE YEAR. The fulfillment of those feasts,…”are a done deal.” That is to say, the events which the four spring feasts of the Lord typify in the Hebrew Scriptures have been fulfilled in the Messiah. In that sense, one can look back at and examine them.  They are history.  They occurred almost two thousand years ago. Their spiritual benefits, however, continue forward to the present hour.

“THE FINAL THREE HOLIDAYS OCCUR IN THE FALL OF THE YEAR within a brief period in the Hebrew month of Tishri (September/October). As the first four holidays depict evens associated with Messiah’s first coming, these final three holidays depict specific events associated with His second coming. Although these events are still future in terms of literal fulfillment, biblical faith may lay hold of and live in he light of their future blessings today. These final feasts form the basis for what the Bible calls the “blessed hope” (Titus 2:13).”  (This article is made up largely of quotes from the book: “The Feasts of the Lord,” by Kevin Howard and Marvin Rosenthal)

THIS ARTICLE, "SEVENS IN SCRIPTURE," is in connection with the longer article: “The Feast of Tabernacles and More.” The Feast of Tabernacles was the seventh and last of the Lord’s Seven Feasts appointed for the Jewish nation of Israel.

STUDYING "THE FEASTS OF THE LORD" makes a strong statement in behalf of studying the whole Bible and not just a few books in the New Testament. We must realize that the nation of Israel and the Church are not the same thing, although they are intricately woven together by the mind and hand of God and are designed to endure forever.

OUR PURPOSE IN THIS ARTICLE IS NOT FOR THE BROAD SUBJECT OF NUMBERS in the Bible. But, numbers in the Bible are valuable tools of understanding. For example, seven is the number related to perfection. Six is the number for man. Five is the number for grace. Forty is the number of testing, etc.

STUDYING THE NUMBER "SEVEN" IN THE BIBLE and studying “The Feasts of the Lord” gives us strong reasons for studying the Old Testament along with the New Testament. The New Testament is NOT a complete Bible. The Old Testament makes strong statements of prophecy and the New Testament shows how the prophecies were fulfilled. My friend, we need all the Bible to have all of the Book of God. Ω

The Feast of Tabernacles and More - Part 3

Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose; in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles: and they shall not appear before the LORD empty: Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD thy God which he hath given thee.  (Deuteronomy 16:16-17)

THE JEWISH MALES WERE COMMANDED OF GOD to come to Jerusalem three times a year. These trips were called: “pilgrimages.” During the three pilgrimages, they would celebrate a total of seven feasts. The three trips/pilgrimages are named in the above verses.

(1)DURING THE FIRST TRIP/PILGRIMAGE IN EARLY SPRING, three feasts occurred. These three feasts occurred during “Passover Season.”  The Feast of Unleavened Bread (which was seven days) followed Passover Feast, (which was one day.) A third Feast, The Feast of Firstfruits, occurred on the second day of The Feast of Unleavened Bread. Our purpose here is to merely mention these three feasts that occurred during the early spring pilgrimage to Jerusalem; not to explain them.

“THUS, THE CHRONOLOGY OF THE PASSOVER CONSISTED OF: Passover (Nisan 14), the Feast of Unleavened Bread (7 days, Nisan 15-21), and the Feast of Firstfruits (Nisan 16). The second day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread (Nisan 16) was also Firstfruits, a day simultaneously shared by both holidays. The Feast of Firstfruits marked the beginning of the spring barley harvest.” (Howard/Rosenthal)

(2)DURING THE SECOND TRIP/PILGRIMAGE, The Feast of Seven Weeks occurred. It took place seven weeks plus one day after the Feast of Firstfruits.  It marked the beginning of the summer wheat harvest. A date was never assigned to this pilgrimage/feast. It occurred seven weeks plus one day (50 days) after the Feast of Firstfruits had passed.

Christians of today know about “the day of Pentecost” in the Book of Acts, but perhaps few know what “Pentecost” means or anything about its history. It simply beans “fifty.” (Penta=five) In Washington, D.C. we have the Pentagon, a five-sided building that houses the “brains” of our military.

And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete: Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the LORD.  (Leviticus 23:15-16)

THIS IS THE "MIDDLE" OF THE SEVEN FEASTS and occurs by itself. At this assembly two loaves of leavened wheat bread were offered to the Lord, plus animal sacrifices. Ye shall bring out of your habitations two wave loaves of two tenth deals: they shall be of fine flour; they shall be baken with leaven; they are the firstfruits unto the LORD.  (Leviticus 23:17)

“THE TEMPLE SERVICES FOR SHAVUOT (PENTECOST) followed much the same pattern as that of the Feast of Firstfruits since both holy days were celebrated with Firstfruit offerings. The waving of sheaves of barley and loaves of wheat bread acknowledged that the source of their bread and all food was from the eternal God. They could not partake of the new crops until the priest had waved the offerings before the Lord and acknowledged His provision.

(3) DURING THE THIRD TRIP/PILGRIMAGE, The Feast of Trumpets occurred. This feast coincided with Israel’s new year. (Rosh Hashanah) “It is the only Jewish holiday which occurs on the first day of the month of the New Moon, when the moon is dark and only a thin crescent. All other Jewish holidays occur later in their respective months when the moon is bright. Normally, the new moon was announced by short blasts of the trumpet, but the New Moon of the seventh month was celebrated by long blasts, emphasizing its solemnity and uniqueness among months.

“THE FEAST OF TRUMPETS IS THE FIFTH FEAST and Israel’s dark day. It occurs at the New Moon when the primary night light of the heavens is darkened. Israel’s prophets repeatedly warned of a coming dark day of judgment. They knew it as “the Day of the Lord,” that terrible period of time at the end of this age when the Lord will pour out His fiery judgment.” (Howard/Rosenthal)

THE DAY OF ATONEMENT IS THE SIXTH FEAST. The Feast of Tabernacles is the last of the seven feasts. We must do a brief study of “sevens” and then look at The Feast of Tabernacles, the last of the Seven Feasts. These brief comments on “The Feasts of the Lord,” do not constitute a “complete study” of the Feasts of the Lord. They merely announce them.”  You may like to go to this site and see a modern Jewish take on their culture. Ω https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/pilgrimage-festivals/

The Feast of Tabernacles and More - Part 2

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the LORD.

On the first day shall be an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. Seven days ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: on the eighth day shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: it is a solemn assembly; and ye shall do no servile work therein.  (Leviticus 23:33-36)

BEYOND OUR AMERICAN AUTUMN CELEBRATIONS of Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, we have some ancient roots with which we need to be familiar. They are: “The Seven Feasts of the Lord.” The first four feasts were in the spring. The last three feasts were in the fall of the year. Because we are in the fall of the year and Halloween is upon us, I thought we needed something else to consider; something from the Word of God. The best place to look first, I think, is at the Feast of Tabernacles.

IN THE FEASTS OF THE LORD,
Kevin Howard and Marvin Rosenthal write:
“Worldwide, thousands of holidays are observed annually. In marked contrast, the eternal God instituted only seven holidays. These holidays are discussed throughout the Bible, in both the Old and New Testaments. However, only in one place, the twenty-third chapter of Leviticus, are all seven holidays listed in chronological sequence.” “These seven feasts of the Lord were given to the Hebrew nation. The Jewish people are God’s covenant people.”

“THESE SEVEN FEASTS RELATE TO ISRAEL'S SPRING AND FALL agricultural seasons. When the feasts were instituted, Israel was largely an agricultural nation. That agricultural characteristic of the feasts remains to this day.” “The timing of these seven feasts is based on the Jewish lunar (moon) calendar of approximately 354-day years. Periodically (seven times over nineteen years), the modern Jewish calendar literally has a thirteenth month to make up for its shorter years.”

“THE SEVEN FEASTS TYPIFY THE SEQUENCE, TIMING AND SIGNIFICANCE of the major events of the Lord’s redemptive career. They commence at Calvary where Jesus voluntarily gave Himself for the sins of the world (Passover), and climax at the establishment of the messianic Kingdom at the Messiah’s second coming (Tabernacles). No box has to be manufactured, no text twisted, and no truth manipulated to make these appointed feasts conform to specific events in the Messiah’s life. These seven feasts depict the entire redemptive career of the Messiah.”

KEVIN HOWARD AND MARVIN ROSENTHAL  are Jewish Christians and their lives are submerged in service to Christ. Their book, The Feasts of the Lord, is the best I know in explaining the seven Feasts of the Lord. As they say, these feasts are God’s Prophetic Calendar from Calvary to the Kingdom, when Christ shall sit upon the throne of David in Jerusalem and rule the world for one thousand years from that throne.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU GET A COPY and read it through many times. It is a powerful proclamation of the backbone of the Bible. You will be blessed by it. Get it into the hands of your teenagers (and younger), your adult children. Talk about it. Discuss it. Absorb these truths until you are thoroughly familiar with them. You can still get new and used copies.

THE PROPHETIC THEMES OF THE FIRST FOUR FEASTS, Passover, The Feast of Unleavened Bread, The Feast of Firstfruits, and The Feast of Weeks, have all been fulfilled. These four feasts took place in the spring of the year.  There is yet to be fulfilled: The Feast of Trumpets, The Day of Atonement, and The Feast of Tabernacles. The last three feasts took place in the fall of the year.

THE FEAST OF TABERNACLES, THE LAST FEAST, WAS IN THE FALL OF THE YEAR. As I have already said, I have chosen to look at The Feast of Tabernacles because we are in the fall of the year.

BEFORE WE LOOK AT THE FEAST OF TABERNACLES, we need to take a brief glimpse at the Bible’s oft-reference to the number: seven. (The Bible makes much use of numbers.) “Seven is the biblical number for perfection and completion. After creating the world, God rested on the seventh day. He did not rest as a consequence of growing tired --- omnipotence does not grow tired, and God is omnipotent (all-powerful). Rather, God rested in the sense of completion and satisfaction. What God created was good and satisfying --- nothing else was needed. Therefore, He rested on the seventh day.”

“ON THE SEVENTH DAY OF THE WEEK, the children of Israel were to observe a Sabbath rest, patterned after God’s creation rest. They were to rest from all their labors (Exodus 16:23,30).” And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, Tomorrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.  (Exodus 16:23) So the people rested on the seventh day.  (Exodus 16:30)

THE JEWISH SABBATH IS A SIGN BETWEEN GOD AND ISRAEL.
It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.  (Exodus 31:17) Please note the words: “…in six days the LORD made heaven and earth” If you want to believe that the earth is millions of years old, the burden of proof is on you to show that you know more about it than God proclaimed through Moses.

THIS IS AN INTRODUCTION TO A SERIES OF SEVENS. There’s not enough room to do it all in the space remaining. We will come back to this, next time and then move on to our study of the Feast of Tabernacles, the last of The Seven Feasts. Ω

The Feast of Tabernacles and More -Part 1
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the LORD.

On the first day shall be an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. WE'RE INTO THE HARVEST SEASON; time for autumn leaves, pumpkin pie and blue smoke curling up out of our chimneys. In America, autumn brings on three themes of celebration: Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, in that order. Thanksgiving and Christmas are national holidays in America when people take off from work and schools take a break.

THE LAST TWO ARE POSITIVE CELEBRATIONS that have a well-established history, literature and a developed body of music; especially Christmas. These two holidays are times of thanksgiving and the rekindling of hope. In a nation with a scattered population, it’s a time for re-connecting and warming of relationships. The nation needs these holidays. For Christians, it’s a time for sharpening our focus on the Lord. Christians need these holidays.

HALLOWEEN IS "LIGHT-WEIGHT" and does not qualify as a national holiday. No one takes off from work or school. There’s no body of literature or music to aid its celebration. And yet, total spending in 2015 was about $6.9 billion, with the average American celebrating, spending $74 on decorations, candy, costumes and more. That’s a big chunk of money but when spread out over America: not big. During World War2 it was hindered because sugar was severely rationed.

SMITHSONIAN.COM HAD THIS TO SAY: “the practice began with the Celtic tradition of celebrating the end of the year by dressing up as evil spirits. The Celts believed that, as we moved from one year to the next, the dead and the living would overlap, and demons would roam the earth again. So, dressing up as demons was a defense mechanism. If you encountered a real demon roaming the Earth, they would think you were one of them.
“Fast forward to when the Catholic Church was stealing everybody’s holidays and trying to convert them. They turned the demon dress-up party into “All Hallows Eve,” “All Soul’s Day,” and “All Saints Day” and had people dress up as saints, angels and still a few demons.  Read more: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/the-history-of-trick-or-treating-is-weirder-than-you-thought-79408373/#DbcEA8CQeBMZFuqs.99

WHAT WAS THERE ABOUT THOSE PRACTICES THAT PROMPTED the Catholic church to try to “convert them?” The Catholic church tried to “convert” the practice because the practice was a “demon dress-up party.” How much of our current celebration remains a “demon dress-up party?”

HALLOWEEN IS THE CELEBRATION THAT NO ONE KNOWS WHY IT'S THERE OR EXACTLY WHAT TO DO WITH IT.  Its history is vague, and puzzling and we don’t seem to know how it’s to be carried out if it should be carried out at all. If it has any redeeming value, it may be because the little ones get to dress up and pretend to be this or that and say ”Hi!” to a carefully chosen list of friendly neighbors. The sugar in the candy will wind up the children and they will have to be pulled off the ceiling before anyone can get to sleep.

BEYOND THIS, IS THE TROUBLING ELEMENT that permeates the celebration: its theme is the underworld of Satan and his celebration of death: skeletons, vampires, ghosts, etc. If you have had to deal with the real world of teenagers wrestling with real demons in their bodies (I have witnessed this) you get a different view.

I SAW THINGS IN JAMAICA THAT WERE DEEPER THAN HALLOWEEN. I saw things when I was principal of a Christian high school that were…much deeper than Halloween. I saw hard-core demon possession…a teenage girl growling and speaking deep like a man because demons were using her vocal chords. Five adults were present with the girl in the meeting. The demons finally left her after two hours of wrestling. Please cut me a little slack if you think I’m narrow-minded.

IN A COUNSELING CENTER IN INDIANAPOLIS, IND, I saw an office of a veteran counselor thoroughly disheveled from the wrath of a demon-possessed teenager. The counselor was a counselor with Teen Challenge for several years. He said their counseling centers in the inner cities had to constantly deal with demon-possessed teenagers in gangs. It may be that Chicago has more than a gun problem. Jesus said of Satan: Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.  (John 8:44)

THE CHURCHES OF SATAN IN THE U.S. are entitled to get a tax-exemption with the IRS, and the formal proclamation of the Satanic message in America is serious business. They are happy to use Halloween and the play time, fun time as a mind-conditioning for acceptance of their way of life. An advanced stage of this idea can include serious gatherings in cemeteries where animals are sacrificed to Satan. When I was in Matanzas, Cuba in the 50’s, children were being kidnaped off the streets to be sacrificed to Satan. A teacher at a Christian seminary in that town told us this.

DR.BOB JONES, SR., WHO ESTABLISHED BOB JONES UNIVERSITY, attended a séance that was so convincing of demonic presence that he never went back again. A friend in my high school told me, after Christmas, that he had been given a Ouija board. The Ouija board told him things about himself that nobody knew. Clearly, a demon was working the board. The Ouija boards and Tarot cards and other devices in this realm, are demonic tools. They are sometimes used by demons to further ensnare young people into the dark world. Beware parents! There IS a kingdom of Satan. Jesus cast out real demons. They didn’t go away when He arose from the dead.

I VIEW HALLOWEEN AS ONE OF THE MANY INTRODUCTORY ROADS to the dark world. Fun! Like the TV productions: “Bewitched” and “Dark Shadows.” Beware.  Play with your children. Make sure they have some play time with parents involved in the play time. Be very careful what you endorse as playtime.

MOST CHRISTIAN PARENTS HAVE NEVER READ THROUGH THE OLD TESTAMENT, even one time. They carry it to church with them every Sunday, but they haven’t read it. They know nothing about the Covenant Chapter: Deuteronomy 28.

THEY HAVE NOT READ THE BOOKS OF THE PROPHETS that describe God’s disturbance over the breaking of that Covenant and the embracing of satanic, idol worship. They do not know Isaiah, Jeremiah, Hosea, Amos, etc. and the struggle God had with His own people who went after the satanic idols of their neighboring nations. We are not under that Covenant, but we are under the God who wrote the Covenant. We are under the New Testament (New Covenant). The New Testament is not any friendlier toward demons than the Old Testament. The question has always been: “Who is on the Lord’s side?” God has not changed His mind about the kingdom of Satan and His people cozying up to Satan’s demons.

EVENTUALLY, THE TEN TRIBES OF ISRAEL WERE CARTED OFF by the Assyrians to be scattered among them to destroy their identity. Then, 150 years later, the two tribes in the south were taken by the Babylonians in three deportations until their city and their Temple were destroyed and they spent 70 years in Babylon to think it over, since they wouldn’t listen to the Word of God and wouldn’t listen to the prophets who came to warn them.

WHEN YOU READ AND STUDY WHAT HAPPENED THERE, then you can understand why some of us are sensitive to the possibilities of being sucked into the dark world of Satan, even by something as simple as Halloween celebration. Have fun! But, let’s not play with the tools of Satan. If you give him an inch, he will take a mile. And, he will take your children if he can.

HOW ABOUT A HARVEST FESTIVAL WITH GAMES AND PRIZES, mixed in with some songs of praise to the God of our harvest Who made it all possible? Is that too “way out?” Well, hundreds of churches are now doing this, at this time of year. That’s why I am visiting the Feast of Tabernacles to show what pleases the Lord in our celebration of Harvest Time. Children can be taught to celebrate a harvest festival as easily as they can be scared out of their wits to the amusement of their parents.

BEYONG OUR AMERICAN AUTUMN CELEBRATIONS, we have some solid roots we need to be fully acquainted with. In The Feast of Tabernacles.

Periodically (seven times over nineteen years), the modern Jewish calendar literally has a thirteenth month to make up for its shorter years.” (The two quotes, here and immediately above, are from The Feasts of the Lord by Kevin Howard and Marvin Rosenthal, p. 13) We’ll continue here tomorrow.

THE FALSE PROPHETS

The False Prophets…
But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?  When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.  (Deuteronomy 18:20-22)

FALSE PROPHETS HAVE BEEN AROUND since there were prophets. God’s approach to the people of Moses’ day and to us today, was to be aware that there are false prophets who will not speak the Word of God but will speak their own words and try to deceive those who listen to them. In New Testament days, the false prophets went after money, prestige, and the weak women in the congregation they might be able to seduce.

DEUTERONOMY IS THE FIFTH AND LAST BOOk written by Moses. God appointed Moses to receive His law from His hands and to lead the chosen people for Moses’ full lifetime. God also placed the role of “prophet” upon Moses and told him that the ultimate prophet would be like him. That ultimate prophet was “the promised one,” Jesus. The standard that God set up for the prophet Moses and all those that were to follow him, was to speak what God had commanded them to speak; nothing less, nothing more.

JESUS QUOTED OLD TESTAMENT PASSAGES when in dialog with public figures and He always outwitted them. Always! People liked it because He knew the Jewish scriptures so well. He quoted Exodus 7 times; Isaiah 8 times; Deuteronomy 9 times; and the Psalms 10 times.

HE SOMETIMES REFERRED TO O.T. BOOKS without saying which book. For example, in discussing divorce, He said: “Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. (Matthew 19:8) He referred to creation: But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. (Mark 10:6)

PAUL WARNED ABOUT FALSE PROPHETS: For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.  (2Corinthians 11:13-15)

MY! M! AREN'T WE GLAD PAUL WORKED THROUGH THAT PERIOD and got rid of all the false prophets? It is so good that we live in an enlightened age in which there are no false prophets to worry about. How awful it would be if we still had false prophets today, like, in our seminaries and book stores and churches and TV and radio programs. Think about how confusing and damaging it would be if false prophets were still hanging around to deceive folks today.

GLAD PAUL GOT RID OF THEM ALL. If the devil were free to deceive people today, he might go after our children and young people and use their friends and their electronic gadgets and other things to attract them away from their families and from God.

CRAZY TALK! False prophets have increased greatly in our day! Jesus prophesied that one of the defining things of the last days would be the increase of satanic deception. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. (Matthew 24:11) “Many false prophets.” “Shall deceive many.” If you were being deceived, would you know you were being deceived? (If you knew you were being deceived you would no longer be deceived…right?)

JESUS REPEATED THE WARNING IN V.24:  For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.  (Matthew 24:24)

THIS IS NO TIME TO BE LAZY. People are working hard and there is a sharp decline in reading today. Newspapers are struggling against smart phones. But, that’s not the whole story. People increasingly want to see pictures and cartoons instead of reading words. Reading takes time and requires more effort at thinking. People are grasping for anything to avoid time-consuming reading.

BUT, THERE'S NO SHORTCUT WHEN IT COME TO THE WORD OF GOD. Pictures help us in highlighting Bible themes, but there is no way to escape the need to read and think. I write more than some people want to read. But, I’m supposed to write, and I leave it up to the individuals whether they want to take the time to read it. Food recipes have pictures, but the recipes are still communicated with words.

EMPTY HEADS AND EMPTY HEARTS CAN BE DECEIVED, and they will never know they are being deceived. We’ve all been told that bank clerks are trained to detect counterfeit bills by handling only the real thing. They don’t need to feel fake bills. When a fake bill comes through, it won’t feel like the real thing.

DAILY BIBLE READING, DAILY BIBLE STUDY, daily Bible meditation and prayer are your surest means of avoiding the deception of false prophets and false teachers and false TV preachers who plow the field every week and some every day. Maybe you should read this article again? Or several times?

HEALTH HINT: We’re approaching flu season. A flu shot might not be a bad thing. I can’t have them because I’ve had Guillain Berre’ (French Polio) and the shot could set that problem off again. A doctor pulled me aside 30 years ago and gave me some suggestions. I have to give attention to things that strengthen the immune system. Hopefully, you will get nothing or a civil garden-variety infection that is not too hard to manage.

Drink plenty of water/liquids. Lighten up on heavy eating. Get enough sleep. Don’t get overly tired. Cut your sugar intake – waaay down! Keep on hand plenty of Vitamin C and plenty of garlic (fresh or powder or capsules) Plenty of Vit. C means keeping 1,000 mg capsules (NOT TABLETS) on hand. I buy them in large containers: (600 capsules). When infection comes on, start taking 2-3 1,000 mg capsules of Vit. C Complex on the hour with 8 oz of water. It will produce gas. No problem. There’s a drugstore, fruit-flavored powder that fizzes, that can help with the Vitamin C thing, but it’s not very strong. It’s like an Alka-Seltzer.

If you take Vit. C “to tolerance,” it means to up the dose until the bowels begin to loosen and then back off the dosage a bit. When infection hits you, it uses up all the Vitamin C in your body and it will continue to use up a lot.

Vitamin C will not kill a virus. It will help you reduce the runny nose and other symptoms until your body can make a blueprint of the virus and begin to produce anti-bodies that will eventually subdue it. When that happens, mucus will thicken and it will go through a full stage of war until the good-guys win. Maybe some of the TV stuff will help. But, for me, the best help is above.

There is no such thing as a drug that will kill a virus. Anti-biotics will kill bacteria, but not virus. So, load yourself up with Vitamin C and the other stuff and stay out of the “coughing center” if you can. If you have the flu, you will know that it’s not just another sneezing thing. Better be in contact with your doctor by phone and get a “heads up.”

Virus infections are often followed with bacterial infections and they can be helped with anti-biotics. I don’t like the anti-biotics that are swallowed. It kills everything in the gut and takes weeks to recover from the drugs. So, I try to avoid the anti-biotics if at all possible. We used to get Penicillin shots, and this worked fine and didn’t go through the gut, destroying everything in the gut. But doctors won’t give the shots these days.

I’m not a medical person of any kind. This is just information I’ve collected from doctors, nurses, and reading and getting sick myself and listening to people tell their stories. Take care of yourself! (Whatever that is.)

         The Prophets…
And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.  (Luke 16:31)
And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.  (Luke 24:27)

And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.  (Luke 24:44)

Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:  (Isaiah 46:9-10)

IN LUKE 16:31, ABRAHAM TELLS THE RICH MAN IN HADES that if his living brothers would not listen to the words of Jewish scripture, neither would they persuaded, though one rose from the dead. In Jesus’ day, the Jewish people referred loosely to the complete body of their scriptures as “Moses and the Prophets.”

A FEW CHAPTERS LATER IN LUKE 24:27, Jesus is talking to His disciples and He says “Moses and the prophets.”  But, in the same discussion with the disciples, he refers to the complete book of Hebrew scriptures again and calls them: 1.The Law of Moses  2. The Prophets, and  3: The Psalms. There is no conflict here. The “Psalms” in that setting was more than what we know as the “Psalms” today. Albert Barnes explains it well:

“IN THE LAW OF MOSES - The five books of Moses - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. Among the Jews this was the first division of the Old Testament, and was called the “law.”

“THE PROPHETS - This was the second and largest part of the Hebrew Scriptures. It comprehended the books of Joshua, Judges, 1st and 2nd Samuel, 1st and 2nd Kings, which were called the “former prophets;” and Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the twelve smaller books from Daniel, to Malachi, which were called the “latter prophets.”

“THE PSALMS - The word here used probably means what were comprehended under the name of “Hagiographa,” or holy writings. This consisted of the Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther, Daniel, Ezra, and Nehemiah, and the two books of Chronicles.

“THIS DIVISION OF THE OLD TESTAMENT was in use long before the time of Christ, and was what he referred to here; and he meant to say that in “each of” these divisions of the Old Testament there were prophecies respecting himself. The “particular” subject before them was his “resurrection from the dead.” A most striking prediction of this is contained in Psalm 16:9-11. Compare it with Acts 2:24-32; Acts 13:35-37. (Albert Barnes)

ALTHOUGH MOSES IS KNOWN PRIMARILY AS THE LAW GIVER (and is portrayed that way inside and outside the Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C.), the Hebrew scriptures have this to say about Moses: And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,  (Deuteronomy 34:10) Obviously, Moses would not have written this about himself. It is assumed that after the death Moses some responsible scholar wrote this into the record.

THE NEW TESTAMENT REFERS TO MOSES AS A PROPHET. For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.  (Act 3:22) Moses was a prophet. The One who was to come to Israel would be a prophet like unto Moses; that is, with the moral authority of Moses. Jesus was a prophet. In fact, Jesus was Prophet, Priest, and King. He has functioned already as a prophet and priest and will one day function as the King of Israel and of the world.

THROUGH THE YEARS I HAVE HEARD SINCERE CHRISTIANS COMMENT: “I just don’t read the Old Testament. I do all of my reading in the New Testament.” They mean well. I try to be patient with these dear saints who don’t have a clue as to what they are saying. “The New Testament is in Old contained, and the Old Testament is in the New explained.”

WITHOUT THE OLD TESTAMENT, THE NEW TESTAMENT HAS NO ROOT or fixed meaning. The Book of Revelation in the New Testament cannot be interpreted apart from the book of Daniel. John Walvoord says: “Among the great prophetic books of Scripture, none provides a more comprehensive and chronological prophetic view of the broad movement of history than the book of Daniel. …Daniel is essential to he structure of prophecy and is the key to the entire Old Testament prophetic revelation.” (Page 7, Daniel, The Key to Prophetic Revelation.”

TO GET A FIRM GRASP OF THE BIBLE, it is essential that we include the prophets and their writings. In the New Testament it is often said that such and such an event fulfilled prophecy. In Matthew through Romans 8, the Bible says 58 times “That it might be fulfilled.” How can one hope to understand the New Testament if one does not know “what was being fulfilled?” Prophecies were being fulfilled. What is a prophecy? A prophecy is an utterance of a prophet. We need to study the prophets in the Old Testament.

KEEP IN MIND: for several years after Christ rose from the dead, there were no New Testament books. The book of James is considered by some scholars as being the first New Testament book. It was written not long before A.D. 49. He was martyred in A.D. 62. Jerusalem and the Temple were destroyed by Titus in A. D. 70. So, the first New Testament book was written at least fifteen years after he crucifixion of Christ and maybe longer.  James was the leader of the Church in Jerusalem and his letter does not mention the destruction of Jerusalem.

WE FIND THIS IN THE BOOK OF ACTS: Therefore, they that were scattered abroad went everywhere preaching the word.  (Acts 8:4) Persecution of Christians began shortly after the resurrection of Christ and the Day of Pentecost. What “word” did they preach as they were scattered abroad? They preached Christ out of the Old Testament scriptures.

HOW COULD THEY PREACH JESUS OUT OF THE OLD TESTAMENT? Because the Old Testament prophets wrote about the coming Christ. Their ministry in those days was primarily to Jews who were scattered away from Jerusalem because of their occupations  that had drawn them away from Jerusalem.

MY FAITH SURVIVED THE STUDY OF PHILOSOPHY IN COLLEGE in college because I knew that the Bible was the book of fulfilled prophecy and that mere human beings could not and cannot predict the future. We have this unique old book that is laced through and through with “it shall come to pass” and “it came to pass.”

THE PROPHETS WERE ALSO WARNING VOICES OF IMPENDING JUDGMENT if the nation did not turn from its wicked ways. Jonah would be such a voice to Nineveh. Hosea, Amos, Elijah, Elisha, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Elijah were warning voices. Isaiah, the prince of prophets, was put into a box and sawed in half. Of Ezekiel, God said: For they are impudent children and stiffhearted. I do send thee unto them; and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD.  And they, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear, (for they are a rebellious house,) yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them.  (Ezekiel 2:4-5)

THE PROPHETS WERE ALL FORE-TELLERS. Today, the voices God calls and sends forth are FORTH-TELLERS. In both cases: the “fore tellers” and the “forth tellers,”  it is the Word of God. Peter said: We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.  (2Peter 1:19-21)

I HAVE READ THAT ABOUT 300 PROPHECIES ABOUT JESUS have already been fulfilled and based on so many prophecies having already been fulfilled, we can expect the rest of them to be fulfilled. Paul says of Jesus: But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,  (Galatians 4:4)

WE ARE LOOKING FOR JESUS TO COME AGAIN and to sit upon the throne of David in Jerusalem, in the fullness of time. And we shall rule and reign with Him for a thousand years. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.  (Revelation 20:6) He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.  (Rev 22:20)

ARE YOU READY? ARE YOU LOOKING FOR HIM TO RETURN?

HEALTH HINT: It’s flea time! They come in the house on your feet and legs and on your pets. There are sprays for sale. However, the sprays will not kill all the fleas and you are going to breathe in some of it. Spraying your feet and legs with OFF  may help. Once they are in the house, the surest way we have found is to get out a baking pan, 1”-2” deep and run a half-inch of water in it. Add 2-3 drops of dish detergent and stir it a bit. The detergent will weaken the surface of the water, so the fleas cannot float. They will sink and drown.

Find a goose-neck lamb with 60W (or so) bulb. Bend the light over the pan of water, about 12” above it. Leave light on night and day for a week or so. The fleas will jump upward toward the light and fall into the water and drown. If you want to see how it’s doing, change the soapy water every day and count the fleas. You may need 2-3 pans going. Living room, bedroom, porch, etc. This works.

ARROGANT IGNORANCE

                       Arrogant Ignorance

O Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O Judah, what shall I do unto thee? for your goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it goeth away.  For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. (Hosea 6:4,6)

EPHRAIM WAS THE LARGEST AND STRONGEST of the ten northern tribes. God interchanged “Ephraim” with the name: “Israel.”  Ephraim was God’s pet name for Israel, (the ten northern tribes that split off from the twelve). Samaria was its capital city. “By this time, all ten of these tribes were so consumed by idolatry that they were beyond hope of revival. As a result, God instructed Hosea and other prophets to quit trying. Their remaining burden was to call Judah to retain her faith in the true God Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend;….(Hosea 4:15) (Morris)

JUDAH IS THE NAME GIVEN TO the remaining two southern tribes (Judah & Benjamin). Judah contained Jerusalem and Solomon’s Temple.  Judah had begun practicing the same kind of idolatry as Israel but was not as far along with it. They would suffer the same fate as Israel at the hands of the Babylonians, about 150 years later.

SINCE 1973, AMERICA HAS SLAUGHTERED 60 MILLION of its most helpless people in the mothers’ wombs. (Hitler’s NAZI Germany killed 6 million Jews. The United States has murdered ten times that many.) How long does America have to repent?

WHEN THE TEN TRIBES BROKE OFF AFTER THE DEATH OF SOLOMON, Jeroboam set up two golden calves to signify God’s continued presence with them. They had no Temple; no sacrificial system and they did not have the God Israel. Hosea commented on these calves: Thy calf, O Samaria, hath cast thee off; mine anger is kindled against them: how long will it be ere they attain to innocency? For from Israel was it also: the workman made it; therefore it is not God: but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.  (Hosea 8:5-6)

“THE CALF OF SAMARIA" is a collective term that includes all the idols of Ephraim/Israel. Israel began and ended with the worship of a golden calf. “This reflected the much earlier time when the children of Israel, encamped at Mount Sinai to receive God’s law, made a golden calf and attributed deity and their deliverance to it (Exodus 32:4). The worship of the calf idol incurred God’s wrath at both the beginning and ending of Israel’s history in the land.” (Morris, p.1292)

IN VERSE 12 WE HAVE AN ASTOUNDING SUMMARY STATEMENT of the arrogant ignorance of these foolish people: I have written to him the great things of my law, but they were counted as a strange thing.  (Hosea 8:12) God called the words of His law: ”great things,” and these arrogant, ignorant people called God’s words: “a strange thing.”

MORRIS COMMENTS: “
God judged Israel for rejecting the great things of His law. How great must be His anger at those modern “Christian” nations that not only count His law “strange” but also the whole Bible and God’s great work of creation and redemption!” (Morris)

HOSEA SAYS: For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.  Israell is swallowed up: now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel wherein is no pleasure.  (Hosea 8:7-8)

WE REAP MORE THAN WE SOW. That’s one of the fixed laws of sowing and reaping. “Sin will take you further than you meant to stray; it will keep you longer than you meant to stay; it will cost you more than you meant to pay.” Israel was literally swallowed up by the great Assyrian nation to the north that had not yet been conquered by Babylon.

THE SCATTERED AND UNSKILLED JEWS THAT WERE LEFT in that invasion found themselves facing strangers that were brought in by the Assyrians to intermarry with them. In Jesus’ day, John 4:4 says “He must needs go through Samaria.” That was contrary to Jewish custom. Jews rarely went through Samaria. They crossed the river and went around Samaria if they had to go north. The conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well tells the story. I hope you will read it….again.

GOD WRITES BIBLE HISTORY FOR OUR BENEFIT. Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.  (Jude 1:7) Ephraim/Israel and Judah are also written as an example to us today.

BARBARA AND I HAVE BEEN MOVING SLOWLY THROUGH HOSEA and studying the history. It so parallels the condition of the United States and the Western World of today that it is striking! Our nation has transformed itself into a culture of death. A thousand babies in the womb are murdered every day. The government does not force it on anyone, but since 1973, it has permitted it: the elimination of inconvenient human life.

EVERY BABY THAT IS MURDERED AT THE HANDS OF A DOCTOR, must first have the written permission of its mother. The mother must sign the paper. The baby is NOT part of the body of the mother. Every abortion stops a beating heart. God sees. The spirit of every murdered baby shows up in Heaven. Does God not notice? Have sixty million babies entered Heaven from America and God didn’t notice them? He who notices every Sparrow that falls, does He not see the flood of aborted babies from America?

WE DON'T HAVE THE EXACT SAME FORM OF IDOLATRY that Israel copied from the nations around them and provoked the wrath of God upon themselves. Let’s keep in mind that an idol is anything that comes between us and God; people approval, positions, possessions, political party, professors; you name it. Anything that enables us to take the place of God. Anything that provokes us to tell God what He can have. The worship of self and defiance of the Almighty functions in the same way as a golden calf.

GOD IS SLOW TO ANGER AND JUDGMENT.  The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.  (Psalm 145:8) Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.  (Isaiah 55:7) If we make peace with God, it will be on His terms and NOT on our terms.

ISAIAH PREACHED TO JUDAH, THE SOUTHERN KINGDOM. Judah was following in the footsteps of her adulterous sister, Israel/Ephraim in the northern kingdom. Judah would be exiled into Babylon in 130-150 years. Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.  (Isaiah 1:18)

McGEE COMMENTS: God is saying to Judah, "Do not force Me to render sentence. Settle your case out of court." In Matthew 5:25 the Lord Jesus said, "Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him …"—don't wait until he takes you to court. God says that He has a secret formula, a divine alchemy, a potent prescription, a powerful potion, a heavenly elixir that will take out sin.

IT IS NOT A SECRET FORMULA LIKE THE NEWEST BOMB, but it is more potent. You will find it in Isaiah 53 as the One who was more marred, who suffered more, who died differently, who was wounded for our transgressions. Because He paid the penalty, the Judge is able now to extend mercy to us. The blood of Jesus Christ, God's Son, keeps on cleansing from all sin.

“THIS IS GOD'S CHARGE AGAINST HIS PEOPLE, and this is the basis on which they may turn to Him. If they will turn to Him, He will preserve the nation—He will give them almost one hundred years—then if they don't turn to Him and change their ways, He will send them into captivity. (McGee) (Almost one hundred years after Isaiah begins preaching to them.)
