Give it Time…
Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.
And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm. And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus. (Daniel 1:18-21)
ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS I HAVE IN MY WALK OF FAITH is waiting on the Lord. I’m in a hurry…He’s not. God waited a long time to put Daniel and his three companions on the stage, just like Joseph in jail down in Egypt. Why Lord? When Lord? Abraham waited so many years for the promised son and he finally decided to help God out and made such a big mess.
THERE SEEMS TO BE A SPECIAL TREASURE IN GOD'S SIGHT of things that require growth and maturity as He waits on the fruit to ripen. God makes things. God grows things. Something good happens to us while we wait, that could not take place if everything was lickety-split, lightning-fast. It takes all summer for Autumn to get here with its treasure of color and glory. It has been coming ever since the snow melted and buds began to appear. This is the way beautiful autumns are created, year after year.
GOD TOOK HIS TIME TO IMPRESS THE GREATEST KING OF THE EARTH with these youth. These young men had no problem standing before the great king because they had first stood before the God of Heaven. Also, they were brilliant, diligent students in what their teachers in Babylon were laying out to them. This brings us to our setting of today. There are many people out there who think that anyone who claims to actually talk with God is “lightweight” and not to be trusted. Their problem is that they don’t know God themselves and know very little about Him. If they don’t know God, then, nobody else knows God. After all, they are the brightest bulb in the chandelier (so they think).
KING NEBUCHADNEZZAR WAS NO SIMPLETON. When he conquered a nation, he took the cream of the crop of the young men and groomed them to serve in his government. After a nation is conquered, then it must be occupied and that is sometimes more difficult. He questioned this group of young trainees after their being taught and groomed by their handlers. He found Daniel and his three friends to be “ten times better than” all their competitors. McGee weighs in on this:
“I WANT TO SUBMIT TO YOU THAT THE BIBLE WAS NOT WRITTEN BY A BUNCH OF ninnies—it wasn’t written by men who were ignorant. Moses was learned in all the wisdom of Egypt. The Egyptians were quite advanced; they knew the distance to the sun, and they knew that the earth was round. It was a few Greeks who came along later and flattened out the earth. They were the “scientists” in that day, you see. Science taught that the earth was flat. The Bible never did teach that; in fact, it said it was a circle (see Isaiah 40:22).
“I GET WEARY OF THESE SO-CALLED EGGHEADS WHO ACT AS IF THE BIBLE was written by a group of ignoramuses. If you feel that way about it, you are mistaken. Daniel was nobody’s fool. He was a brilliant young man and he was taught as few men have been taught. Don’t despise the learning of that day. There were many men who were well advanced in knowledge, in science and in many other areas. Daniel is going to be exposed to all of this.” (McGee)
DANIEL WAS AN OLD MAN APPROACHING A HUNDRED WHEN HE WENT HOME. He lasted until the first year of King Cyrus.
I HAVE ALREADY MENTIONED THAT MY MOTHER'S MOTHER: Olive (Singleton) Richards named me and the only book (besides the Bible) I remember in her house was a Bible story book with a picture of Daniel in the lions’ den. For me, that made the book of Daniel the front-runner of all the books in the Bible. I now know more about why it is one of the most important books in the Bible. I’m still studying it. We can only high-light it in the Morning Minute.Ω
