Prove Thy Servants
Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants. So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days. (Daniel 1:12-14)
YESTERDAY'S ARTICLE ON THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND of Daniel provides a setting for today’s study. Every time I read about these four teenagers standing for God in Babylon, it strengthens my resolve to live for Him. It’s more important what God thinks than what people think. Jesus brought this up when He said: How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? (John 5:44)
WHO ARE WE GOING TO PLEASE? Our land is cursed with the scourge of political correctness. How can you be your own man or your own woman if you are more concerned about the opinions of the crowd rather than the opinion of God? We need to consider these four teenagers in Babylon who had been raised on a silver spoon as royalty but somehow had great faith in the God of Heaven.
PUT US TO THE TEST! Prove thy servants! We’ve heard it said: “Put up or shut up!” They didn’t fold. They were teenagers! How old do you have to be to stand up for God? “As thou seest, deal with thy servants.”
IN MY YOUTH I HEARD A LIVELY SON THAT SAID: “If you have named the name of Jesus, if you’re known as one of His; Remember that the world is watching To see how your vict’ry is. WHAT YOU ARE speaks so loud That the world can’t hear what you say; They’re looking at your walk, not list’ning to your talk, They’re judging from your actions ev’ry day. Don’t believe you’ll deceive By claiming what you’ve never known; They’ll accept what they see and know you to be, They’ll judge from your life alone.” (Key of A-flat) (P.60, Songs That Touch the Heart, Vol.1)
